Chemistry in magic

Postby magicmclovin » Sep 27th, '08, 02:41

This is a thread for the use of chemistry in magic (as you probably already guessed). For example: pure acetone looks just like water, put if you put a styrofoam cup in it, it dissolves if you push the cup downwards.

Cool, cos like dissolves like.

I have to admit that quantum physics is real magic, we did some in a chem lect and I was freakin out (inside my head because Im british and we dont show emotion!)

Alot of magic does involve chemistry, we are just not so overt about it, although I do like the above effect!

I really think that this topic needs to be seriously controlled in that Chemical Magic offers a very HUGE aspect of danger as well as health risks. More to the point, we run the risk of the less mature experimenting with this sort of stuff and potentially getting hurt or causing harm to others.

Long story short... BE RESPONSIBLE when it comes to what is shared in this thread.

As an alternative to acetone, sulfuric acid can also dissolve (burn!) a styrofoam cup, as well as your hand.

Phosphoric acid can dissolve your bones without dissolving your skin (That much)

Its quite a fun trick, but remember and use a fume cupboard PLEASE!

Just to be on the safe side, can we make sure we don't post any recipes for chemical effects? There's a small possibility that some people will try them out and may get hurt. There's also the stronger possibility that anything alluding to explosive or incendiary effects could be misused.

Chemicals are not meant for playing around to impress people with, they can but there are too many variables..... for example sulphuric acid can
explode on contact with water depending on its concentration so ya...

anyways since i didnt want to make a new thread i was wondering .... what type of chemical is roughing solution they use on the cards ?

With any discussion or presentation of tricks/ performances which use dangerous materials, there is a risk of people trying it without being responsible and getting hurt or dying.
While I think that some measure of responsibility should be put into what gets posted here I never worry too much about that, as I look at it as evolution continuing its work.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

It works with us intelligent folks. But you never know who else might be listening in...
