We have to do something!

We have to do something about the revealing! There are tons of sites revealing MANY tricks. for example learnmagictricks.com, magicteacher. I think those are the biggest ones. But what can we do?!?

There are several threads on TM about exposure sites and the conclusion of them all is that we can't do much to stop them. No matter how careful and conscientious you are, there are probably a dozen or more sad people giving away secrets because they know it's not the thing to do. Pity them more than be angry, if they had lives they'd be doing something useful. Few people outside of magic will remember how things are done and, let's be honest, they're not stupid, they know we use trickery to achieve our results so they've learned nothing really new. All we can do is to make sure our magic is fresh and interesting so the method becomes the least part of any routine. Stun the specs with your performance and they won't care how things are done.

I think we should bring back the magic circle 'special branch' who's magic skills focused on making people 'disappear'.

Its a little known fact that the sawing a woman in half routine and the bullet catch was originally created as a cover so the special branch could carry there tools around with them (a gun, seven bullets, a saw and a large wooden box) and not get in trouble.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

Streetmentalist writes, in part: ". . .We have to do something about the revealing!"

Why?

Seriously, why?

Surely no one who has been doing magic for more than a week believes any lay person remembers a method for more than an hour or so.

So why worry?

The REAL magic isn't in the methods anyhow.

I was the uk representitive of a world wide body of magicians trying to stop exposure, and plagerism.

it closed down.
you know why?

its an impossible task..

the best way to stop these exposure sites, is to not talk about them, and not visit them. because, and heres the big thing..
i think that most people who visit them get the links by googling, and having our pages come up.

Its teh same as masked magician shows.

we watch them, so we can complain about them.

if we didnt watch, the ratings would be low, and they wouldnt make any more.

and if we discuss them on forums like this, then the hit count on search engines goes up, and they sit back and laugh because of all the free adretising they get.

If you want teh mass exposure to die down, the very best thing to do is totaly ignore it.

It's not so much of a problem as explained in a number of threads.

How many of your tricks has it affected? How many people have changed their opinion of your magic?

If people are exposing the simple things, it just makes us work harder. So it's all good stuff.

By now, I'm surprised anyone on the lay public side bothers reading about exposure anymore - in some performances I've done they just assume I'm doing something sneaky (isn't that what we do?), and make up a method on the spot...sometimes before I've delivered the effect.

I did one trick for my 8 year-old nephew with someone's borrowed deck, and he still accused me of using a trick deck. Kids these days...
