I would imagine most people here are going to direct you towards books, and away from what you seem to be buying, which is a lot of gimmicks...

So to start that up, anyone would advise you to get:

The Royal Road to Card Magic
JB Bobo's Modern Coin Magic
Mark Wilson's Complete Course In Magic

And I myself, would definitely recommend:

Paul Harris's Art of Astonishment
And just because it really is so valuable, Strong Magic by Darwin Ortiz

If necessary, you could try some DVDs, which I'll let someone else recommend, but I'd go with books.

Hope I didn't give you the opposite of the response you wanted.

But could you go out and take my iPod and make it disappear?

No, you need some sort of apparatus for it. What I mean is you should learn some impromptu things, and that's what those books will teach you.

Who do you perform to? How often do you perform? Amateur or for money? And what reactions do you normally get?

That will help people give you the advice you're looking for.

to make the ipod dissapear all that is needed is to keep in mind line of sight and a sleight
i don't perform for money but if someone gives me a tip (which is rare) i don't refuse, i guess i just like their reaction. I perform about two or three times a week at the mall and for friends at random times. i change my routines every once in a while. Easy or hard the trick has to give a good reaction and not bore the audience during the process.
