Mobile phone rant

Postby MagicBell » Oct 11th, '08, 17:43

Just a little rant. I need to vent my frustrations.

After going to and fro, looking for a new phone to upgrade to (mine is okay but lacking a few features I'd like and a bit damaged), I got overexcited and ordered myself a Nokia N96. Reviews made it sound pretty great and on paper its an absolutely amazing device.

So who the hell reviews these things?

Upon starting it up, I was instantly hit with a couple of (admittedly small) issues and the sluggishness of it is unbearable. Just trying to scroll through the pre-loaded images and videos is a chore and it always gives the impression that its just about to freeze.
There is already a firmware update available but I've heard nothing of it improving the speed and as a mac user, i cant update anyway as you need to download the crappy software.

This is such a huge disappointment. With 18 month contracts I was really expecting this to be a phone I could keep and use for that long, but i dont think i could bear to use it for a day. Im planning on returning it but im really quite down about it now and i dont know what else to go for.

Today has been really green and slimy.

I dunno what features you're after - but I've had a Nokia N95 for a few months now and I've found it more than adequate  .

If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Most networks will let you change the handset in the first few weeks of a contract, ask as soon as possible.

You should also be able to cancel without penalty in the same initial period, threaten that and they will change the handset.

Despite the general consensus that the N96 (or any other phone) is a good phone, there is always going to be a chance that it won't be right for you. You might just have a dud. If it's slow to react and generally unreliable, then I expect your network will simply exchange it or give you the option to go with another phone.

I don't believe there is a single phone on the market today that doesn't have its own problems. Every phone I've ever owned had something annoying about it; some of these problems were more serious than others and the minor issues I have learned to live with. After a short while, you just get used to it.

Im pretty sure its fine (apart from one particularly minor issue) and that its just the phone itself that i dont like. I knew it was slow and stuff due to the mass of features, but i expected it might be better than previous handsets and thus not too problematic.

I was wrong.

After further usage though, i did begin to like certain things about it - i just realise that many other phones will do those things too, and be less annoying to me at the same time.

I know I can return it and I most probably will. It costs nothing (perhaps postage or something) so it was a worthwhile experience - now i wont want for the thing any more.

If your returning it re-box it immediatly. Even so much as a hairline scratch on it and they will try and not accept it for return.

If they're going to be like that about it, then he can just say the marks/scratches were there when he opened the box.

Just thought that I would pop in and say that my new iphone 3g is lovely, especially with a contract that gets contracted back to work meaning not only did I not have to pay for the handset, but not for the use of it either for the next year...

don't you just love leaving presents from work? ;)

Love
