Paperclipped (Reprise)

Postby GaryGrace » Oct 16th, '08, 02:41

I've done this for friends a few times now and recieved good responses so I thought I'd share it with you.

It's a combo of a quick effect from a Blaine TV special and Sankey's "Paperclipped". I love PAPERCLIPPED and wanted to extend it and felt the Blaine effect segued into it quite nicely.

Please pardon the poor M*****y F**d but I have gotten away away with it so far whilst the specs debate the odds (a real-life angle also makes it far cleaner.

I could also have done a better job removing the paperclip in this performance but as Annie Hall said; La de da!

So here it is -

I thought the "move" was a little chunky. I guess in real life you'd use misdirection but on a camera it looked a little bit...sloppy.

EDIT: Relax. That's all I'll say without revealing it.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Look alright, but without seeing it in context, with patter, and with misdirection, it is tough to critique (pos or neg) honestly.

A good start, but there's a few problems that I have with it.

1 - You start the overall effect with a "try to see a card" kind of thing, but don't place any real emphasis on it. Yes, you might get a hit from it, but you seem to blow it off. Also - remember that you show the wrong card. To me, this makes the effect seem to fail (in the context of the Blaine variation - you're trying to get the correct card). This effect (to me) isn't meant to be played as a "card trick", but the miss and color change turns it into one.

2 - Speaking of the color change, it tends to hurt the whole thing. Take each phase of this routine in context. You change the card from one to another. You are creating the conclusion to the paperclipped phase before you even introduce it. You've made one card change - it just seems that most audiences will instantly think their card will change into the paperclipped card.

3 - The context of the paper clip didn't make sense to me. Perhaps if the clipped card was brought out before the selection was even made? This might make the overall effect more convincing, as a prediction.

I prefer to have it onthe table as and hope that someone alludes to it being their and then "boom" a M......y F...d and the card in play right then ends up their...it is a matter of timing to do it this way. The better the timing works out the better response I get....ideal when happens at the tail end of a trick and it occurs as an off-beat type of thing. There are times when I sweep it up and move to hte next table without anyone ever asking about the clipped card, but I do find it stronger when a spec refers to it first.

Without patter or a performance angle its difficult to give advice.

I do like the premise of the trick tho'.
