If you're after 100% impromptu and visual close-up magic, I'd suggest that you check out some of Gregory Wilson's DVDs - in particular On the Spot and Off the Cuff.

The ungimmicked Miser's Dream is ideal for street work and is totally impromptu.

By impromptu...do you mean they are approaching you and asking to do something, or are you approaching them and doing something impromptu...big difference as one is less "impromptu" than the other.

Crazy mans handcuffs...
A flash production of an item...
Even something as eye catching as some basic card manipulation...

Really anything that is fairly fast, visual, and doesn't require you to have a "connection" to the spec will open the door. Avoid things that require lots of wordiness or tons of thought on the specs part....you can move into that once you have their attention.

A nice ice breaker for walk around street magic is Sankey's "Wrap it Up"
It's fast, visual, and the spectator gets a free piece of gum.

It uses a gimmick and requires you to wear a coat so I'm not sure how practical it would be for you though.
