That's a nice way of getting around it, and depending on the effect there are other subtleties you can add, too. For instance, if the deck is partially stacked or for whatever reason must be kept in order you can swivel cut half the deck into your other hand to bury the selection and then pass. That way you're also retaining deck order.

I think this is where the knowledge of numerous card sleights prevails.In a situation like this you could just ignore what they said and continue by saying ''no no look i'll show you again''and then using a different sleight.knowing numerous of sleights will always get you out of a situation like this for instance your own quick thinking.KM move is also good for this situation but i think theres something a bit queer about it so i dont generally use it.

But i do know what you mean when you talk about the shame of being caught.Getting caught can be stuck on your mind for days after its happened,i think thats because theres no one to talk to about it when you do get caught.I refuse to ever get caught on a DL tho and havent been caught since i was a kid but it will happen someday,we are human after all
