Umberella.. ella... ella....

Postby Lady of Mystery » Oct 15th, '08, 09:55

Howde hoodee folks!

I'm on the hunt for some material on umberella or parasol magic, I've found the Joker Lam dvd and a boxed set of 7 parasols which are looking promising. But that's about all I've managed to find so far.

Does anyone know the DVD, what's it like. Any other sources of info that people can suggest as well as a good source for the parasols would be really appreaciated.

Thanks guys :D

Surely Fukai must have something out on dvd or even sell the parasols. Saw him do the parasol routine at Blackpool about 4 or 5 years ago. Prety much the master of that I reckon.

Id also look around for some ordinary spring opening brollys, to mix with the production ones. Sometimes they are in pound shops ! ( though you will need to re cover them)

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Thanks Lambert, I did have a look at those but I'm really more after the production parasols. I'm putting together an oriental silks routine and a few parasol productions would really set it off well.

Ok... a Fairy-Gypsy that Reads Palms and dances with Umbrellas?

You could take a look at Shamada circa mid 1960s and early 70s. His kabuki styled parasol & dragon act is legendary.

Not my cup of tea, but World of Magic has a huge number of 'Parasol Anywhere' products, including a set of different coloured 'newspaper' parasols.

Craig's once again come up with a great reference. Haruo Shimada is a legend.

The only thing I've found thus far, is footage of his daughter Launa doing her version of the old act... it's quite good!

Wow I never knew there was quite so much stuff on parasols. Would there be any materials on Chinese fans instead as I'm interested in them?

I've tried looking but the only resource seems to be a booklet by Vic Jahn and I can't find it anywhere as well.

Shamada did a lot with fans but I believe you can find routines further back, the Chung Ling Soo era (show) in that such is classic to the Chinese magicians (along with large bowl productions, usually filled with liquid).

The Asian world of Magic, at least at the traditional level, was quite different from what we Westerner's have ever considered until recent years. It was highly guarded as "Family Trades" that went on for generations. Mark Wilson has some amazing stories about his dealings with the Chinese performers and how honored they were (humbled) whenever he taught them a simple effect in that such things simply were not done randomly in their culture. For a Master to share any kind of knowledge along said lines, was a very high accolade to them.

Might be nice to see us re-embrace some of that thinking... :?

Thank you very much Mr Browning for your input.

Unfortunately, Google has failed me. :(
