And the remake with Nicolas Cage is absolutely hilarious; I have never laughed so much watching a "horror" film. Honestly, it should be classed as "comedy" because horror it ain't.

There have been a fair few awful remakes over the last few years. The hitcher last year with Sean Bean. Not quite sure what he was thinking taking that role.

Some of my fav franchises are:

Hellraiser
Nightmare on Elm Street
Puppetmaster

(Ok, so the obove options do have some seriously dodgy installments - IE Retro Puppetmaster)

Some single films:

Hatred of a Minute (ex-leatherface Gunnar Hanson)
The Eye (japanese one)
13 Ghosts (remake)
Hannibal Rising
Sweeny Todd
Bram Stokers Dracula

I second anything with Vincent Price in - especially House on Haunted Hill

I'd also suggest some films that have a dark craziness about them but arnt actually 'horror' films persay:

The Rocky Horror Show (and the sequel Shock Treatment)
The Nightmare Before Christmas
The Abominable Dr Phibes (and Dr Phibes Rises Again!)
Edward Scissorhands
Beetlejuice

(I'm suprised by how many of these I've seen. I need to get out more) I've decided to watch "Bram Stoker's Dracula" "The Exorcist" and another one that I'll pull out of a hat probably.

Thanks for the input!

Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Well said!

(Although as lozey says, the Phibes philms, er, films aren't very scary. Extremely stylish and darkly comic, though, especially the first one.)

That list was a nightmare (on Elm Street) to search, but I didn't spot 'Profundo Rosso' there (aka 'Deep Red'). 'Suspiria', by the same director was present, but I'd rate them both highly.

Also, try some ancient chills. 'Peeping Tom' has been claimed as the first video nasty (although I think that's a bit silly), and the even older 'Dead of Night'.

Alien listed as the #2 horror movie of all time? I wouldn't call that a horror movie. Granted, it's subjective - but I never considered Aliens a horror (nor do I feel Seven or Silence of the Lambs are specifically horror).

Frailty was an excellent movie. It's one of the very few times Matthew McConaughey actually played a role, instead of himself.

Psycho may be a bit dated, but it's the grandaddy of the Psychological Thrillers. It's always good for a watch, if for no other reason than to enjoy the masterful work of Alfred Hitchcock.

Some of the Romero films are great, so long as you don't trip over all of the soapboxes he leaves scattered throughout. Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead are classics. The others...meh...

28 Days Later is a great flick.

Audition isn't the greatest movie, but the female lead is one of the creepiest women ever. If that last scene doesn't disturb you a little, nothing will...

Halloween is my all-time favorite. I'm not sure what others think, but I thoroughly enjoyed Rob Zombie's remake. He paid due respect to the original, and gave a nice glimpse into what really made Michael Myers tick.

I absolutely hate the Amityville Horror. Regardless of the fact that it, in no way, resembles the actual events, it's beyond annoying when any out-of-state person calls and somehow manages to mention that damn house... Almost 30 years later, and yes...people STILL ask from time to time. Makes me pray for a question about stupid Amy Fisher.

Back to horror -

Stir of Echoes was also cool.

Agree with The Exorcist - rumour was that subliminal imagery was used in film to "explode" in your subconscious. Also first of the Omen series

Yes, this is an excellent film. Very creepy in places.

I watched The Exorcism of Emily Rose last night and thought it was superb. It's a courtroom drama interwoven with horror as the circumstances of Emily's possession are recounted from the stand. Very disturbing film, quite frightening and utterly absorbing. I loved it and would recommend it to fans of the genre, especially if you liked The Exorcist.

For a bit of sick fun, try to get hold of an obscure thing called "Ready Teddy Death". Pure snuff movie, with teddy bears.

I saw bits of that it looked a bit twisted but I laughed so it can't be bad...right?

Er... which one did you laugh at? The teddies are pure twisted hilarity from beginning to end.

FairieSnuff is right -- Saw is fantastic. Forget the critics being shocked. Yes, it IS extremely gory and graphic, but it's not "torture porn". There's a good storyline in there, some adventure-game-style puzzles, and some decent twists. My only quibble was that, being an adventure game enthusiast, I guessed the final surprise well in advance.

A lesser-known but extremely good film is "Dead Silence", about ghosts and a malevolent ventriloquist's dummy. Much, much better than I expected it to be. Deeply scary, even if you don't normally get creeped out by dolls.
