Conducting children's magic camps

Postby moodini » Oct 27th, '08, 04:10

I am doing some research on children's magic camps as I was recently asked to do a small one, but have also long been considering offering some on a regular basis. With that in mind, I would like to tap the resources here on TM and get an idea of what others have done or maybe even attended themselves.

For those that may have some info for me, please anser the following infomation...feel free to PM if you would rather do it that way.

Thanks in advance!

1) Format of the camp offered/attended? (example, 3 hours one Saturday, 1 hour a day for 4 consecutive saturdays, etc)

2) What price did you pay/charge for the camp?

3) What was the advertised age range for the camp? (Example, 7 to 12, 8 and over, etc)

4) What specific effects were taught/learnt by you? (TT vanish, professor's nightmare, coins, etc)

5) What was the number of tricks taught (per day or total over a few days) during the camp?

6) Did you give/get a magicians kit and what was included in it?

7) Besides teaching/learning tricks themselves, what other things were empasized? (Example, misdirection, patter, performing/acting, history, styles of magic, etc)

8.) How many kids attended the camps - what is a good class size?

9) Did the magician hosting do a camp do a magic show for the group at the end? Or was it an ongoing magic show that really lasted the entire time of the camp, whereby the magician would occasionally stop/break charector to teach a trick for a while, then move on again?

10) Any other bits and bobs that may be important (either to include or omit) for a camp...

i've never been to one but i signed up my little brother to one for his birthday for 25 dollars. I think it was two hours long and he got a pack of cards. He came home and showed me all the tricks he learned, he had a lot of fun, he was 8 and the camp was on a saturday at our local (hour away) magic store.

I have no experience whatsoever with these camps, but I do have an idea of a sort for kits (If you so choose to hand them out).

As many know I'm a huge fan of Mac King. He was a huge inspiration to me and was my first magic book I ever received. A good kit is his book/kit which is only twelve dollars (can be included in tuition) and it is funny and teaches some simple tricks. Some of the tricks require props and the book has a bunch of pop out pages in it where you can pop out your own props.

It's fun and centered around Lewis the monkey. So it's fun for kids while at the same time contains informative tricks.

Just a thought...

Oh and at the end you can have them all do a show and each of them do one or two tricks for their parents.

Just some ideas take them or leave them...

As for tuition I don't know what would be sensible I'm thinking along the lines of $40. I may be overpricing it though...

Anyways a rather unsure post by me to try to help you.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Went to Tannen's last year, great camp.
1) Sleepaway for a week
2) Can't remember, a good amount though
3) 7 to 20 I believe (Don't expect you to do that, most kids were between 12 and 17
4) No specifics to everyone, people learned at their own pace
5) Once again, people learned at their own pace
6) There was a kid with a few DVDs, washers for coins, a deck of cards, sponge balls, and some other small things
7) There were workshops on various different things, and people learned based on what they wanted to
8) Something around a hundred, with classes of maybe 15 people
9) There was a magic show every night, performed by counselors and other people who came
10) The classes were divided by skill level and stage or close-up
