Hiya Liam,
Here's Becky's Top Table Hopping Tips....
Table hopping isn't all that scarey, firstly my golden rule is to never approach a table that's eating or look like there's a serious descussion going on.
Always be nice and polite when you approach a table, I usually say something along the lines of 'Hiya, I'm Becky, you magician this evening. Just wondering if you've got 5 minutes for a little bit of magic'. Some people say don't ask if they want to see magic, I totally don't agree with this and think that it's not only polite but give them a chance to say no if that want to. You never know, someone in their family might have just died or they could be talking about divorce arrangements and you doing magic really would be inappropriate.
Always be nice and polite, introduce yourself and ask them for their names. Be interested in them, a little bit of small talk can help ease you in here too.
Your magic set should last about 5 to 10 minuites and if you can involve magic with as much audience participation as possible.
When you finish, don't ask for a clap yourself but ask for a clap for the people who have been helping you. I'll usually say something like 'a round of applause for Jim and Sue for being such great sports'. It not only makes your helpers feel nice but other tables will hear the clapping and be much more expectant and open when you arrive.
Lastly but most importantly, look the part. People's first opinion of you are very important, look smart and their going to be much more responsive than if you dress scruffy.
