Secondhand Spells...

Postby Criptic1 » Oct 27th, '08, 10:46

Hi, I've been rambling through the forums on TM for some months now and thought it would be rude to continue tramping round unannounced!

I'm (like a million others here!) a keen amateur, for the past few years I've been buying gadgets, books and packet tricks direct from dealers and on ebay, but I have to say that the variety of items on ebay seems to have dried up dramatically in the last 6 months. Where does everyone advertise the stuff that they've got sat at the back of their drawers, tried once but 'doesn't suit their style'?

All thoughts gratefully received - I've been disappointed trying to sell my cast-offs on ebay too, so finding a 'magic exchange' somewhere on the net would be great!

Hi Criptic1, welcome to TM!

Most members here tend to use the Trading Area of TM, however there are some rules:

Trade of approved items only. Initial post limited to approved users of over 50 posts and only after submitting a PM with full details to a Moderator. Restricted Area Members automatically have approval.

No selling/trading of instructions which includes Books, DVDs, Videos etc.... We will allow, and promote, the sales of prop based tricks (e.g. Knife thru arm) but not allow the trade of instruction based tricks (e.g. booklets/videos/DVDs etc.) - basically, if you can still perform the trick after you have sold it, you may not advertise it on this site!

So all the more reason to contribute I suppose! Alternatively you might like to consider offering one or two items, out of the kindness of your heart, here

Thanks for the pointer to "The Giving Thread", I'll be happy put up a few items that aren't worth the hassle of ebaying (Skywalker anyone?)

The Trading Post is useful but, by the (understandable) restrictions placed on posters there isn't a huge range of bits and pieces (my partner thinks I'm a magicolic but I hear you can get treatment!). There's a US website (magicauction.com) but doesn't seem to be anything similar over here.

Not sure how close answering one's own question is to talking to yourself in public - but here goes!

I've found the classified pages of magicweek.co.uk - and they're great! I hope I'm not touching on anything political here  - I noticed that there is no link from Magicweek to Talkmagic, even though this must be one of the most popular magic forums in the UK?

Anyway, I'm impressed with their classifieds - no DVDs, great variety (particularly books) and I've just bought a copy of "The Mind and Magic of David Berglas" so no wonder I'm feeling chuffed!
