If you were referring to actual skin colour, you would of course call him "brown." It really does confuse me

So, when the PM visits the president for the first time, does he say

" we have so much in common. For a start, we are both Brown"

Brilliant speech too!

The brilliance of his speech is highly debatable. Sadly, it's been a long while since a politician has actually inspired me. I actually thought his keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention was incredible - I even mentioned to friends that if he continued on that way, I would vote for him.

However, the man who delivered that speech is not our new President.

Less that 40 years ago actually... my baby sitter (early 1960s) was a wonderful old black woman and I have vivid memories of her having to sit behind the back door of the bus while I sat forward... many a time her hickory cane poked me as a means of correction

No... the racial situation was still alive and well through the 60s and in some parts of this country well into the 80s. The irony being that the bigotry seemed to shift away from the south and into the north.

I'm just grateful Barack made it into the White House... I just pray that he lives long enough to make the kind of changes this nation needs at present... there is a huge fear by his supporters that someone will succeed in taking his life, partly due to the fear and hatred sewn by the McCain group during the latter days of this campaign and partly due to that bigoted element -- the white supremest issue that will not support a "black" president.

As Obi Wan said, striking him down will only make him stronger and as we saw with the Kennedy brothers and Dr. King, striking them down made the iconic inspirations that have practically been canonized e.g. the fools that try to take Barack out of play will only make him a martyr and thus, far more powerful an inspiration than he may otherwise prove to be.

Yes, call me psychic but I do genuinely have a funny feeling about this. I pray that I'm just being overly concerned. Hurrah for Obama.

My biggest fear right now, however is of diappointment. I remember all the excitelemt in 1997, when a thoroughly sleazy tory party was trampled on by something called New Labour. Everyone spoke of change and a big bright future, but then somewhere along the line, Tony Blair turned out to be... well... Tony Blair.

I sincerely hope that Mr Obama doesn't turn out to be another Mr Blair.

I'm with you, there. I also hope people aren't putting too many expectations on him...he's already got his work cut out for him cleaning up the damage from the past 8 years.

I wish to thank everyone, especially non-USA residents, who feel the excitement of seeing and hearing a President Elect who will truly, without equivocation, be the voice of FREEDOM and EQUALITY.

And, the best thing about his election is that the IQ level of the Executive Branch of our government will be at least three digits, for the first time in eight years...
