What does everyone think proper attire for a show should be? There's no right or wrong but I'm just curious as to what everyone thinks.

Also support your answer; why do you think it is good to wear this clothing of choice.

You missed what may be the most popular - a lounge suit, shirt with collar worn with or without a tie (most often with).

Most, but not all working magicians and pro's will wear this atire most of the time and will have black tie (tuxedo) for more formal occasions.

I can't edit it now so... If anyone wishes to vote for this, please do so.

If i am performing at a cocktail party/after dinner event, then its normally my favourite black suit with a subtle and faint purple stripe. A freshly polished pair of black shoes - and a black or white shirt sans tie.

If for a more boisterous evening - then it's my splendid black needlepoint cord 2 button jacket, jeans, striped shirt and dark brown shoes.

More often than not, a suit and tie, better if need be.

Depends on the performance.

For my stage show, Edwardian suit, waistcoat, pocket watch, smart shoes, etc.

Corporate show: more modern gear (John Roca suit at the moment)

Smaller venues and walk around: suit and tie, or jacket and tie

Being a man of mystery I am often dressed in black suit (plain or pin-striped) with a black shirt, black waistcoat (& pocket watch with chain of course), and sometimes black tie. Othertimes I may feel the need to be wild and whacky and may substitute the black shirt for a white one.

Steve Martin wrote that the performer should be better dressed than the target audience.

It all depends on the performance for me, if I'm doing a table hopping or walk about I'll wear a nice, long cocktail dress. For stage performances, when I do them at the moment I'm tending to go for a purple cat suit with a venetian mask.

However - questions like this are for the most part difficult to answer as different events - different shows - will dictate to some extent what you wear.

As Todd says it depends on performance...You might find me in Victorian clobber with pocket watch...or in T.shirt and jacket combo for a night club...if its some walk around gala then defo NO tuxedo, not enough pockets and not enough moverabiltiy in it....Black Suit with waist coat and pocket watch is my usual attire....but again it depends on the situation.

though ill add that usualy my buiseness suit is black. and for good reason. If i get to a gig and they are expecting d.j, i change my tie to a bow, and im ready
