I ordered this after reading Tom's review. Initially I had a touch of 'jiffy bag let down' when it arrived, but having persevered for a couple of days I've changed my mind. I've used the EM Charger as a reveal for another of Tom's recommendations called 'Common Scents' (reviewed elsewhere on this site).

The way it works is this. I do the Common Scents routine as usual, including sniffing the scent but having sniffed the scent I then say I can't decide which card it was after all and I need some help from my divining rod. I get the spec to shuffle up the cards as I then whip out an ordinary plastic drinking straw from my pocket (the sort with a bendy bit at one end - I use the other end for divination!). I put the straw on top of a plastic bottle with a top on. (Dice are recommended in the routine but I must have the wrong sort of dice because they don't work too well for me.) Lemonade bottles are good or mineral water bottles. Taking each card in turn and holding one corner up to the hole in the end of the straw I say that the straw is sniffing the scent to see which one it was that the spec chose. With a bit of care and timing, I can get the non-chosen cards to not trigger the divining rod, but the chosen card to send the straw spinning round. If you are lucky, the straw may well drop right off the bottle which gives you the ideal excuse to pick up the straw at the active end. The bendy end of the straw acts as a useful indicator now because it is the other end you need to pick up by. Having held the straw for a couple of seconds you are completely clean. You can hand the cards and the straw/bottle to a spec and let them try and replicate your divination miracle.

I'm having problems with the charger, with reliability. At a kids party yesterday it let me down and I had to abandon it. Experimenting back at base it still seems to only work some of the time and then inexplicably at other times it doesn't want to know. I've tried using different divining rods including the one supplied and allowing more time for them to charge but I can't figure out why it sometimes works and then other times doesn't.
Any ideas?

I have one of these and sometimes it is a bit erratic, but never as bad as you have said.

It could be the surrounding conditions or possibly that what you are using is not sufficiently clean. Do you just have the charger or have you read the Penomenon book too? I seem to recall it's the latter which explains about prepping things.

Sorry for being vague, but this is in the open forum. If you have the stuff, you'll know what I mean!
