Ideas for the Mullica?

Postby Farlsborough » Nov 17th, '08, 21:42

Hi guys,
Some of you will know I'm a bit of a wallet fetishist. Saw a reasonable deal on a BKM wallet recently and bought it, because, well, I like the Mullica wallet and the way it works! There's something really nice about it (although for looks and general function I still love my Real Man's Wallet very much).

Anyway, I'd like to get out and use it. But clearly, as with many magic wallets, it looks a bit funny for a young man with no evening jacket to be using this big ole' wallet. So I wondered - are there any M.W. fans out there who have a particular presentation or line that they use to "smooth" the appearance of the the thing?

I want to keep it brief rather than go into some long story, partly because I generally don't like "story tricks", partly because most of the conditions I do magic in are just not suitable. But I was thinking about telling them it was my grandfather's wallet, and when it gets to the little wallet part, saying he always kept a five pound note in here for emergencies - could then bring the card out with the five pound note. I'd probably introduce the trick by saying my grandad taught it to me.*

Anyone got any other ideas?

(*What would magicians do without these interesting old grandfathers and uncles...?!)

I like the fact that you're staying away from a story presentation. I try not to use them outside of little childrens' shows in magic.

I'd say that your idea is quite a good one to use. Just don't make the whole grandfather thing seem too sentimental. I've seen magicians use the "grandfather" bit quite often, and it often comes off as seeming fake. I suppose, however, if you perform it correctly, and make sure to not over do that part, it would work fine with the presentation.

Hope I was of help to you. Good luck on performing it.
:D

I'm curious why you suggest that story telling is for childrens shows only. I am an amateur, but I have learned that the very simplest trick can be made most entertaining by spinning an interesting tale. Indeed, I suggest that Farlsborough's Grandfather idea is in essence a story.

Further, I have performed the same trick with a Stripper deck--using a different story--to the same people with good success. They assumed that they were different illusions.

Your name suggests you specialise in mental magic. I can see how story telling might not be appropriate--but something like the ID lends itself to a humourous story.

Okay...in conclusion...Once upon a time there was a MentalMan who lost his Mullica wallet ..... hehe!
