Hi all from a noob

Postby Feygan » Oct 30th, '04, 23:14

Hi all, Just signed up after a quick browse through, from stumbling on the forum. I've always loved watching magic and wanted to learn, just never gotten around to it.

I don't really have much interest in big showy stuff (making elephants disappear just aint my thing) But I love all the close up, slieght, and misdirection work.

So since theres a fair few pros and other widely experienced folk on here, any suggestions for where to start out? Ideally I'd like to learn coin stuff as it holds the most fascination for me. But I also realise it requires lots of manual dexterity and many hours of paitent practice to perfect, so it may not be the ideal starting point. Hense the asking here really for ideas and suggestions from those who have been there and got the T-shirt.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Feygan,

If coins are your thing - then coins is what you should start with. I would recommend that you start by getting "Bobo's book of modern coin magic" as that is really the bible for starting out with coins, but you may find it easier to learn from a DVD, in whch there are many to choose from. Try looking in the review index as a starter. I know that Michael Ammar has a beginners coin DVD, and Ian Kenndal has a VCD that covers the basics...

Bottom line though, you are going to have to practice a lot...

good luck.

hi feygan

you don't have to be a skilled coin worker to be a working pro but to echowhat has already been said bobos is the best place to start but don't worry if you learn the bobo switch the downs palm, the classic palm and a false transfer you will have all the tools you need to do a sucessfull coin routine as you other coin skills improve.

bobo switch will alow you to do colour changes and swaps for special coins  the downs and classic give you two great vanish and apearences and combined with a false transfer you have a full miser dream / coins acros routine you can do relatively quickly which will give you an all important ego boost as you start the long tediouse hours perfecting coshman's and other nasties.

remember the golden rule first do the action like puting a coin in your hand at least 20 times a day for a week then do exactly the same but retain the coin.
mirrors are great but a webcam / video camera is much better if you have access to one.

i,m currently on limited access for six weeks but feel free to pm me or mail me and i will enderver to help anyway i can.

best gimicked coins for your arsenal are:-

copper silver coin.
scotch and soda or coin unique variants.
hopping half (expanded) or sun and moon.

thease will make you a coin master well before your time so use with caution and remeber to do some real practice, coin magic can be done all in the wrist or you can get some help but i say why not both.
have fun with it.

Apart from that, they're so awkward to get on the bus when you need to travel to a gig  !
