In need of magic terms

Postby kolm » Nov 18th, '08, 23:02

I'm in the planning phase of writing an article about how computers are confusing for non-techies, and the idea I'm currently having is to talk about another hobby of mine (what? I have more than one! I'm not boring!), magic

Basically, I'm going to liken the two and mention a few magic terms in the process. The thing is, I obviously don't want to give away any methods (even the well known ones) — keeping in mind the target audience can use google very well.

Does anyone have any suggestions for terms that are obscure enough to be useful here? Or maybe I should give up being patronising :)

Sleight, Move, Pass, Force, Misdirection are all words which could be used without giving much away.

Hehe! Gordon Ramsey actually does own a magic shop - it's called The Magic Cave, I believe ;) ;)

If you are doing this for non-magic types then why not just make up a load of stuff then there is no way of them ever finding it on Google

How about...

Fickle jumping
Grab slashing
Clabber
Wizzle
Zando

Any old rubbish!

Should be fun :)

I am quite tempted to throw a made-up word in there, for laughs :)

Pick words out of Harry Potter!

Would be rather amusing for them to think the magic terms used there are real.

No dark arts though!Hmmmm

Yeah, make up something! Or make some alterations so the terms aren't easily Google-able.

I was watching one of the Masked Magician shows the other day -- the one about street magic -- and noticed that all the key terms were altered. For instance, the mindreading trick used a move called the "circle tear". Even the DL was given a different name, but I don't remember what it was.
