Card under box - ideas for big finish?

Postby Fort » Nov 29th, '08, 16:41

I've spent the past few months working my way through Derren Brown's card under box routine from the Devil's Picture Book. It's for a specific performance I plan to give near Christmas for family and friends.

For those familiar with the routine you'll know that a suit jacket is required to perform the final phase of the routine. This section was actually the aspect that interested me the most as I think it's beautifully devious. I'll be wearing a suit for this particular performance, however I pretty much never normally wear one and wondered if anyone had a good idea for an ending that could be performed sans suit?

The routine up to this point has seen the card appear under the box twice. The spec now has their finger on the back of what they believe to be their card, laying face down on the table. The selected card is actually on top of the deck, also face down on the table.

Where to go from here for a surprising, big finish that makes sense and fits with what's gone before? Maybe you could point me in the direction of another card under box routine that could be incorporated or perhaps you might like to flex your imagination and see what you come up with?

Thanks very much.

You could, without wanting to expose the method here, load the card for the final reveal as you normally would up until it goes into your suit jacket , place the box down and the place something right over the card box.

You know, as well as anyone who has seen the routine, that you could show nothing was under the box for the last reveal. Slowly place it down, put a hat over it, or a bowl or anything that completely covers it.

All that remains is to slowly lift the object, flick the box away and it's there.

Easy ... load something else under the box, or as a twist, the box under something.

Derren Browns routine is excellent because it physically removes the box and deck in preparation for the finale. That's going to be a hard one to beat.

James Brown's routine is very good, and has a very tidy logical (?!?) finish, and his tips on misdirection on his "Fancy a Pot Of Jam" video are very helpful.

Guy Hollingworth's version is also very good from his "Routines" DVD, although he uses 3 selections which all appear in turn under the box.

However my advice is very simple. CHEAT! I always have at least 1 duplicate lurking somewhere in my deck.

phuzion? Just checked it out and it could be a decent finish. the back of the card box is removed and shown to be the selected card.
