Coin recommendations?

Postby Relish » Dec 1st, '08, 17:55

I'm now at a stage where im happy with the 10-15 card based effects I know and I'm looking to expand on the other parts of my act, namely some coin work. I currently introduce coins using Coinvexed and then use a coin in 'The Hidden', but i'd like another 2 or 3 coin routines that i could use.

I currently own Bobo's and i am prepared to put the work in to learn the necessary sleights but i'd like some recommended routines so that i know the outcome will be worth the study. I dont mind buying gimmicks or other books with the routines in, my only request is that 2 of the 3 could be done strolling, in case there isnt a table.

thanks in advance

:)

depending on the venues you perform in - mainly requiring a table for this one - a fairly simple yet stunning coin trick is one of the coin matrix versions out there.

Relish: Ive got quite a good (if I do way so myself!) 3 phase routine Im quite happy to give you the phases if you need them?

It can be done strolling or at a table.. Its not a closer though, so Id save Coinvexed for after it (or at least I do)..

It's well worth getting any Eddie Gibson gimmicks you see for sale. I've got a lot of mileage out of just the coin unique.

I'm a bit like you Relish in that I mainly work with cards but would like to branch out a bit more into coins. I bought Bobo's but haven't given it a huge amount of study - cards just seem to speak to me more. Not in a weird way, no instructions to kill or anything.

I'd recommend Revolutionary Coin Magic by Jay Sankey for some good routines. Sankey's 'funny' voiced 'wacky' presentation almost makes it unwatchable at times for me and is possibly one of the reasons I haven't studied it as closely as I might. He teaches a routine called Mr Clean Coins Across which is great for impromptu strolling. I filmed myself practicing recently which can be viewed here http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=9yvOcSRzzYA This is just a rehearsal tape, by no means a performance, needs patter etc. to figure out exactly what's happening but should give you an idea to see if it's the kind of thing you might be interested in.

It occurred to me when watching Sankey's DVD that if I lived in the US of A, I might be more inclined towards using coins. American shrapnel seems to lend itself much more to magic. There's a pleasing weightiness and a satisfying clink.

Are there any slights that you're particularly good/bad at? At the moment I'm getting good responses from Gadabout coins, particularly the end phase (tho take out the phase in the middle where the coin goes through the hand... with thanks to Michael Jay for that tip); and my all time favourite coin trick has to be Miser's Dream

I love coin magic because the magic is so "simple". Probably one of the best (and easiest) effects you can do is Copper and Silver with the change taking place in the spectator's hand. Note that David Roth's simple handling is much cleaner than the one in Bobo (p243). Also, coins to glass is a lovely effect with lots of lovely noisy magic happening right out in the open. I don't know of a stand up routine in Bobo but I think David Stone has some interesting ideas and moves that may be useful.

Also - if you intend to work without a table, it's a nice trick to learn to sl**ve so that you can flash a hand that's completely empty or make a switch. Takes a while to learn, but it's well worth it with Dr E. M. Robert's Method (p107) probably being the most practical.

Relish,
E-mail me if you are (or anyone else is) interested in my No-Gimmick Scotch and Soda.

Why spend money on needless gimmicks when you can get the ungimmicked version for FREE.

Just e-mail me (that's e-mail, not PM).

cheers,

You guys should do this....I have this and it is simple and effective. My scotch and soda no longer "work together" well so was always bothered about it and thinking that one day I would reinvest in antoher....after Peter's read I decided against it.
