I've searched through the records and can't seem to find anything on this, so I hope this isn't starting an old thread.

I'm gradually working through The Royal Road, and also using RK Basic Card Technique DVD. One of the tricks I've bought (TS) can use an Elmsley count to give a better performance - so I've been practicing this lots.

I've just about got it down to a near 100% error free routine, but would like to know if there are any other good routines, or tricks that use more than 4 cards to practice my Elmsley Count (using a standard deck) Is it possible to discuss this? Or could someone email me privately? Thanks,

Just out of interest - when was the Elmsley Count first used or discussed in the public domain (well magic domain)?

Rainbow Cascade is a brilliant routine that uses the Elmsley extensively.
You'd have to buy the packet trick but it's not expensive and well worth it.

NFW! and Twisted Sisters both use the Elmsley, Double Back (my personal favourite packet trick!) can use it but doesn't necessarily need it. If you do searches in the Review section you'll find more guff on all three routines. I believe Alex Elmsley first used this move in the 1970's (1972 or thereabouts?) but there was a Ghost Count using the same moves before that.

I think the Ghost Count is the same thing, Mandrake. Certainly the descriptions I've read seem basically identical, but maybe one of the cardy people can confirm that.

I'm always plugging Alex Elmsley's 'Four Card Trick'. If you have a deck of blank cards and some ordinary jokers, you are ready to go.

Quite true - I was just trying to be diplomatic! Although the Ghost Count was in existence well before Alex used it, the main reason his name is associated with it is that he used it extensively and produced routines centred on it - rather than just leaving it as a secret move which can be done if required.

You'd have to buy a whole DVD for just one effect but the rest of the content is well worth it and the Effect itself and the teaching behind it are awesome.

Lethal Fours from Greg Wilson's Pyrotechnic Pasteboards

Greg teaches a seven card elmsley and the instruction is well layed out and easy to follow. It will take alot of practise to get it perfect but what in magic doesn't. And at the end of it you will be able to do a seven card elmsley (as well as a 3,4,5 and 6 card elmsley!).

you could also try "Twisting the aces" by Dai Vernon... it uses nothing but elmsleys!...

Unfortunately you'll have to register (it's free) to get access to the advanced one (this is the one your looking for I believe).. but I have to say the instructions are a little difficult to follow (it seems to tell you what to do and then repeats the move giving some suggested patter which i found all a little confusing at first)

Alternatively I have a more concise version of this which I did just to make it easier for me to follow (PM me if you'd like it)

Just wanted to thank you all for taking the time to comment and suggest all of your tips.

I'm just looking at the link supplied by SlipperyPenguin. It looks a great site, which I'll have to spend more time at this evening.

I'll also have a go at some of your suggestions and drop by and let you know how I get on.

Oh yeah - I've orderd Double Back as recommended by Mandrake - after reading all of the reviews and watching a video online, I just had to order it!

Trust me, you won't regret it! I'd strongly suggest you use method 2 which doesn't use the Elmsley but that's just my preference 'cos it makes it all so easy peasy!

I normally practice the Elmsley/Jordan style combination but I have my own version of the Jordan count. This is because I didn't know the Jordan count when I learnt the Elmsley so I came up with a count to get the target card back into the Elmsley position. Along a similar line to the OPEC (Out of Position Elmsley Count) Count, I've named it the BTEC (Back To Elmsley Count) Count. I might make a video of it later to see what people think of it.
