Christmas films!

Postby themagicwand » Dec 17th, '08, 23:55

So following on from the Halloween/horror movie thread of Cymru, I wondered if anyone else likes to get in the festive mood in the run up to Christmas?

So far me and the missus have watched:

Planes, Trains & Automobiles (which is actually a Thanksgiving film, but what the hey, it's all the "holiday season").
The Muppets' Christmas Carol (the best version of Christmas Carol ever!)
And tonight we watched my favourite Nightmare Before Christmas.

We still have to watch Elf, Polar Express, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and Edward Scissorhands (not strictly Christmas but has a nice Christmas feel to it). Oh, and Home Alone if we can be bothered. We may or may not also watch Holiday Inn and It's A Wonderful Life. But we may not have time, and who knows what DVD's Santa will be bringing us anyway? I know one lucky lady who's getting Doctor Who season 2 in her stocking (BINGO!).

Got my tickets to the Christmas eve showing of 'It's a Wonderful Life' at the Glasgow Film Theatre. My all time favourite film.... I don't mind admitting it reduces me to tears (or at the very least, a manly tightening of the throat) every time...

"To George Bailey.... the richest man in Bedford Falls!!"

I also get choked up at the end of the classic Tom and Jerry Xmas cartoon when Jerry gets caught in a mousetrap but instead of it snapping down on him it winds down slowly playing a xmas carol and the two arch rivals exchange presents..... sob... (anyone else remember this or am I imagining it??)

It's not exactly high art, but Jingle All The Way often gets a watch about this time of year...

And any fan of The Simpsons should check out Olive The Other Reindeer!

Bad Santa was a pretty good film, thanks for reminding me about it!

And yeah, Muppets Christmas Carol, brilliant. "We're Marley and Marley, woooooo!"

I love the Disney Christmas Carol, with Mickey Mouse as Bob Cratchit, Pluto as Marley and Scrooge McDuck as........well, Scrooge. I taped it as a child and adored it then, and its just as charming now. Trouble is they really only show it on the Disney Channel now, and since i hardly watch TV there's no point paying for Sky for one animated film which is a shame, i'd love my son to enjoy it as i did.

The Little Theatre in Bath is showing Its A Wonderful Life too, and Mrs Grimshaw hasnt seen it. I may drag her along for a damn good blub.

Yes, I remember that Tom and Jerry cartoon. A real "awww" moment if ever there was one.

I'll have to agree that It's a Wonderful Life hits all my buttons too, although Col would dismiss it as soppy. I have a recording of the Lux Radio Theatre production of it, and will have to pull it out and listen to it some time soon.

The Bishops Wife
Miracle on 34th Street
Scrooged.

These Dvd's are all lined up and ready to be watched by me and my girlf but haven't quite got around to it yet. Watching them after the 25th is just plain wrong somehow and the thought makes me feel slightly ill.

Smashing, thanks chaps... If I find it tonight it'll make my decade!!

Not really heartwarming but surely the award for best Santa in a movie should go to Dan Akroyd in Trading Places ("is that a fish in your beard?") or Popeye Doyle rugby tackling a lowlife in French Connection?

I've just bought the dvd of the BBC classic 'Box of Delights' and I reckon that'll get a watch before the big day.
