The Clip Shift - seriously?!

Postby queen of clubs » Dec 24th, '08, 15:58

OK, I'm appealing to the honesty of all those out there who have Chad Nelson's "Surfaced" DVD.

The clip shift. Is it all it's cracked up to be? Obviously I'm not asking for exposure, but I've been watching the trailer and my credit card finger is itching, but with Jordan C's recent thread about method disappointment firmly in mind - considering the change looks totally impossible - is it any good? Is it acheivable for an intermediate amateur?

I really want to buy this DVD but I have this terrible feeling it's going to be either rediculously gimmicky or ridiculously hard.

I bought it. I wasn't disappointed inasmuch as the move allows you to do the effects as shown. The dribble control alone is probably worth mastering the move. If you can master it. I've not had much success, and whereas the video does show you the move many times from different angles, it seems to be one particular point that I get stuck at which is probably the least seen bit on the DVD. I'm now stuck in the trap of not knowing if I'm practicing it wrong, or am on the way to improving such that I can do it properly. I also had to stop because of pinky strain. You will also get through a lot of cards working on the move.

Not a yes or no answer, but hopefully of use.

It has, unfortunately become the move to learn" if you are a kid with a webcam trying to be good with cards, rather than entertaining people!

I have the DVD, I liked it and I am say...80% with the clipshift. I can do it, but not everytime.
It's hard but not harder than some of the stuff in Erdnase. Like all sleights, if you put the effort in, you will reap the rewards.

You've said you spent several hours with cards in hand Queenie, I think you'll pick it up fine. As long as you honestly want to learn it!

Not sure about the rest of the material taught on the DVD - the clipshift itself is very similar to the "flexible shift" taught on "The Session" DVD... 2006, I think. If used as a utility control - can't speak for the colour change.

Queenie, given that you're a "pass - as - colour - change" person, it's probably right up your street :D I for one won't be putting in the time required as I can think of a trillion* other sleights that are probably more worthy, but depending on your commitment to being a "card techie", go for it.

*mild exaggeration. Hey, it's Christmas eve/day, I deserve to be p*ssed.
