Side Steal

Postby Johnny Wizz » Dec 27th, '08, 19:51

Hi all,

Hope everyone had a good Christmas.

Can anyone point me to a good source for learning the Side Steal please? I seem to have missed out on this sleight in my education and now have a need of it.

Thanks

John

Paul Cummins' Side Steal Declassified DVD is a very good resource. It's based on/around Annemann's invisible side steal...

There are explanations in:
Expert Card Technique by Jean Hugard and Frederick Braue
Revolutionary Card Technique by Edward Marlo
Card College Volume 3 by Roberto Giobbi

There are probably many more sources but with a whole chapter dedicated to the move in RCT, an easy to follow text in ECT and brilliantly explained and illustrated instruction in Card College, you really can't go wrong. For sheer size of the explanation etc, Marlo would definately be the top choice, followed my Giobbi and then Hugard!

Off the original topic...but how many people use this in there everyday repetoire? I have put tons of work into it and never ever been able to pull it off with out detection....am I missing its usefullness, or is it all about massive amounts of misdirection?

I often use it, in fact, it is one of my most used controls. Spectator peeks followed by an immediate side steal whilst squaring up the deck.

One problem a lot of people seem to have is forcing the card into the palm position which looks awfull unnatural and is wrong! The card is losely clipped between the fingers and replaced as the card naturally squares the ends.

I am working throught James Browns "Still Fancy a Pot of Jam?" and he uses it extensively in some interesting routines. Maybe I need to relook at thse and see if there are alternatives already in my repertoire for this particular move

I learned mine from Expert Card Technique.

The trouble I've always found is not so much keeping it invisible (I mean, there's plenty of cover available, so it's just a question of getting it up to speed) but keeping it silent.

It doesn't matter so much in a crowded and noisy environment, but even so the sound of that card dislodging can carry across the room if you slip up.

It's a very useful sleight, and has gotten me out of a hole in routines before now, especially mental ones, as it's easier to hide than a pass and it's the perfect accompaniment to a spectator peek.

I find the sidesteal is an extremely handy thing to use- I wouldn't say it's my most used control but it is definitely around there- it is definitely worth learning :D I learnt it from expert card technique also- it also contains Max Malini's cover for the side steal which is very handy :D

Henry Hay uses it as a colour change in Amateur Magicians' Handbook.

I've been looking for a chance to give out a website that I have found incredibly useful. I don't know if any of you have heard of Steven Youell but he does some incredible things with a deck of cards and has a website where he posts up tutorial videos for rare and sometimes very difficult sleight of hand.

You have to pay a one-off price of $25 but that definately covers the material he teaches/advice on the forums. The side steal is not taught their yet but he says he is in the process of making a tutorial video.

It would take far too long to list the things already on his site, or the things he has planned, but all I will say is it is very worth it.

I don't know if I can give out links to another site though, but if you are interested then PM me. If I am allowed, I'll just post the link up.

Also, no, I'm not Steven Youell, or have anything to do with the site (except for being a member that is), nor will I get anything beneficial from telling you about the site, I just feel it is worthy of more attention than it already has got!
