Reports are coming in that Zunes stop working today at midnight.
Anyone got any proof wither way?

It used to make me angry to hear the ignorant dismiss Y2K as a hoax because it "didn't happen". It "didn't happen" for the very good reason that a lot of people did a hell of a lot of work on vulnerable systems get them through it. I know people at the company I worked for at the time were running around like blue arsed flies for a couple of years, checking code and making corrections to date fields in ancient databases that were supposed to have been retired by then. That's not an easy task when you have to understand the original schema, dump and hope you can reload the database into another updated schema, then test the whole thing without proper documentation or knowing what hidden interrelations there are between triggers and stored procedures, and what extra storage requirements there will be - all before 1/1/2000 to make sure the date calculations in some very serious but creakingly old systems still worked. Now, if reports are to be believed, it takes just one minor software update by Microsoft to create a global single point of failure. What on Earth is a Zune doing taking notice of the date anyway?

The Zune has a subscription service, hence the need for the date. Once you stop paying, it knows and will prevent access (possibly delete?) music that was only accessible via the subscription service.
I'm glad I have an iPod

, and I am sure very large number of Zune owners will be switching.

I hate them both.
I hate iPods because if I take the time to organise my music into a folder before putting it on there I don't want the bloody thing splitting my music off into separate folders forcing me to make a playlist to get things back in order.
Zunes because of subs.
An mp3/mp4 player should be as the cheapest ones are, you drag and drop your folders and they play according to how you want them with the device detecting if it's audio or video. Whilst the cheapies may not last as long overall they certainly give better ease of use and and are much more intuitive devices!!
God bless Hong Kong on this one!!

Microsoft's response:
We are aware that customers with the Zune 30GB are experiencing issues with their Zune device. We are actively working now to isolate the issue and develop a solution to address it. We will keep customers informed on next steps via the support page on zune.net (zune.net/support).
The word here is... what? why? who? buh?
What the hell is so special about the date 2009 that borks an mp3 player?
Your reality, sir, is lies and balderdash, and I'm delighted to say that I have no grasp of it whatsoever.

Dunno. It might be trying to store the number of seconds since the epoch in too few bits.

2008 has one more second... that's the only difference that makes sense to me, but then I haven't ever written professional code, so what do I know?
