Shiny coin - tips?

Postby caubeck » Nov 18th, '04, 20:25

My new Coin Unique is wonderful but it looks so new that it stands out a mile. The date on it, 1999, doesn't help.

What is best - to let it grow dull alone, or to let it wallow in the fluff beneath the bed for a week? Any advice?

Hi Tom,

Right, that's what I was hoping someone might say: handling makes perfect. I don't own any expanded shells etc. so I wasn't entirely sure.

Eddie says in his leaflet that I should keep the coin dry, wipe it after each handling etc. to keep its "fine finish" so I suppose that doing the opposite, in moderation, will dull it down a bit.

For the stage or for performance in public I am sure a nice shiny surface would look wonderful, but for my own dark purposes a coin that blends in with the others in my pocket makes me feel more confident to take it out. Shells never sound right anyway, so to draw any more attention to it would be a bit self-defeating.

Thanks for the advice. I'll leave your experiment for someone else to try, though!

Would plain yoghurt do anything useful in this respect? If you want brand new terracotta flower pots etc to age quickly, painting them with plain yoghurt encourages natural algae to grow much faster than normal. Perhaps it would also work on coins?

good for thrush too.....so my late wife has told me

yes that would work but its a bit messy on your hand wereas cold tea when dry atracts bugs like a magnet and dosnt make your pockets all stained and ikky (i'll leave that to your own deviseing)

Why on earth would you want algae on your coin ! lol !
Surely this would make it stand out !!

Seriously though, general handling is the way to go.
If your coin is not dulled enough from practice then you probably haven't practiced enough.

Well, it might stop people stealing it for a start!

No, I was just wondering if it would speed up the usual aging and dulling process on the surface of the metal so it didn't stand out as being new. Naturally you'd have to wash the coin to get the muck off otherwise you'd be going round with a pocket full of Muller Lite or something equally horrible!

This is just what weve been looking at at uni however how to stop it!!
tryleaving it in a bowl of rain water for a week or if you are really breace put it in a flower pot of soil for about 4 weeks this takes away the shine butifilly but can damage certian effect coins.

PCWIZME thats me!!

Need a prop? have an idea for a trick but cant work it out? Ask me via PM and ill have a look for you

Thanks for all the ideas.

In the end general handling has helped remove the shininess of the metal. I carried it around with my other change until it started to blend in, and now it looks fine.

Handling the Gibson coin is easier than with other s&s sets I've bought but I'm not so comfortable with handing it out or letting the spectator pick it up. It feels and sounds slightly different from normal coins, despite the [ being undetectable by sight alone.

The non-magnetic Tango 0.50/0.05 euros version is better in this regard. I've almost spent it several times already. Arriving home and saying "oh NO what have I done?...oh, thank god, it's this one," has become such a common part of my day that I'm thinking of incorporating it into my routine, to be followed up with the magical phrase "damn why won't I remember to keep it in a different pocket?" Oh yes, born to perform am I.
