A Variation of an ECT bottom deal..

Postby cymru1991 » Jan 4th, '09, 02:11

Evening Guys and gals! Here's a variation of the bottom deal taught in Expert card technique- slightly adapted by me. It's only been 4 weeks in the making but I'd appreciate some good constructive criticism from you.. (By the way, I see there is a very obvious "kick" of my hand at the beginning- hopefully that can be worked on) Thanks in advance :D

For 4 weeks, it's impressive! I'm not sure how I can constructively criticize as I bottom deal with a slighty different technique.

I think watching the performances of Darwin Ortiz, Ricky Jay and Martin Nash would be a great learning tool as they each do it effortlessly and invisibly, whilst there hands are being burnt.

The one thing you have to consider, is what are you going to be using it for? If it is a bottom dealing demonstration, then of course you have to have it absolutely perfect as the specs will be watching carefully.

There are a number of routines(particularly by Ben Earle) that use the bottom deal for purely magical purposes that never gets suspected as cheating or false dealing hasn't even been mentioned.

Finally, just an inkling, but I have a feeling you would like a Darwin Ortiz routine I saw just recently. I'll look it up and PM you the name as soon as I remember it but I'll describe it in the mean time!

He does the standard explanation of bottom dealing etc and how it can be used and how you would never deal to yourself, and then asks the spectator to pick a position for the aces to be bottom dealt too.
He then proceeds to deal the cards as in a game of poker, after showing the four aces clearly on the bottom and is quite clearly, if not clumsily, bottom dealing to the designated hand.

When it is turned over however, it has a completely different hand, say the four kings, and the four aces lie at his own hand.

It is genius as the bottom dealing to the designated hand is really clear. You literally see him deal from the bottom yet the cards all change. One of my favourite bottom dealing demo's!

Thanks- and there are two main things I am hoping to use it for- one is the standard bottom dealing demonstration, and the second is a routine that I've altered slightly from "Card Control" by Arthur Buckley- I will ask the spec to name a number of poker hands, which hand he wants to be and the amount of shuffles I am allowed to be able to stack the 4 aces to his hand. Of course upon the completion of the dealing, the Spectator sees he has his aces, but I turn my hand over to show a running straight flush :D
I'm sure there will be many other things that I will use this sleight for in the future too- Keep the comments coming guys :D

Definately looks good after 4 weeks. As you say, the little kick in your wrist that happens after the bottom deal really should be lessened. But it is good that you are showing consistency and kicking your wrist back when you are dealing normal tops.

There are also some people who think bottom dealing should be done fast, some say slow. I know people like Ricky Jay normally deal bottoms slowly, but take someone like Steve Forte and he deals them quickly. Two of the best sleight of hand artists in the world today dealing bottoms at different speed should really indicate that it does not matter, but personally I prefer a faster deal. Thats just preference though :D

And Lenoir, I love Ortiz's material, but I just hate the way he fake deals. Martin Nash and Ricky Jay, though, are amazing. Jason England is also excellent, and if you can stand giving money to Theory11, he has an excellent download on the bottom Deal.

But back onto the video, I don't really know what else to say! Although I will say that last night me and a mate were playing a drinking game (best of 5 on Pontoon) and for some strange reason he kept loosing... I love the bottom deal
