Hi

Hello, I'm Mal and I want to be a magicman.

I am completely new to all this but I'm willing to put in the work to become a decent magician. My particular interest is in Mentalism. Are there any tried and tested books/tricks out there to get me started?

Also, do magicians get laid much?

About the same as every other profession I'd say. It's about the person - not what you do.

If you're looking to get laid through mentalism then I wouldn't bother. Learn to swim and go and be a lifeguard. :?

Here's an idea...no matter how annoying someone may be and how ridiculous you find there intro, a point in the right direction would be polite. Everyone needs a bit of help now and again

If you are interested in learning and performing Mentalism, this is the thread for you. Our own Craig Browning has written up everything you will need for at least the first year of study. If you are serious, do something wise and take in all his advice.

Much obliged guys.

I'm not really looking to learn magic in order to get laid, that was merely an attempt at humour.

I'm genuinely fascinated by the subject and would appreciate all the help I can get.

I'm in London. Are there any reputable places in London where I might be able to learn this stuff, or would I be better off trying to teach myself from books/DVD's??

Lenoir, I really appriciate that link.

Cheers, Mal. :D

There are two main magic shops in London, both run courses in the basic principles of magic but neither run specific Mentalism courses. If you are 100% dedicated to Mentalism, I would follow the course I linked you too, but also pick up "Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic." Even as a Mentalist, you are better off with a few basic principles in traditional magic as a larger percentage of the field relies on sleight of hand than you probably realised!

The two shops in London are:

International Magic:
http://www.internationalmagic.com/

and

Davenport's Magic Shop:
http://www.davenportsmagic.co.uk/

If you e-mail them, or pop into the shops, they'll give you a complete run through in what you'll learn on the courses.

Finally, there is a regular-ish meet of members from this forum in London which you might think about popping along to! Find out about it here:

Much obliged again.

Could someone please tell me what "Naked Mentalism" is? I've seen it mentioned on a number of occasions, and I'm not entirely sure what it's referring to?

Ask Tomo who wrote it or click the Naked Mentalism II link below - Lulu gives the details you need  .

hiya, welcome to TM.

One brilliant book to start out with is Karl Fulves Self Working Mental Magic. It's nice, simple and has some very good effects in it. Once you've read and played around with the ideas in it then you'll probabaly want to look at Corinda's 13 Steps to Mentalism or Annemann's Practical Mental Effects.

I wouldn't totally rule out learning magic techniques as many of these can be adapted and used very well in mentalism.
