hello talk magic

Postby JGR » Jan 6th, '09, 22:00

hello, i was recently invited to a poker game and having never played before decided to go online to learn some card flourishes to impress everyone so they would fear my poker skills. while on youtube i saw videos explaining how some card tricks worked and, after a bit of practice, realized that i enjoyed doing the tricks as well as watching them.

i now feel that i dont mind putting a bit of money into learning some more stuff, just after christmas so have some cash, and would like to buy a good book on beginner magic. guess it's probably best to learn one type at a time so card tricks would be good. there seem to be a lot of them and i was wondering if anyone have any recommendations on where to start?

also i live in leeds and the only shop i found on google was merlins in wakefield, does anyone know of a good one in leeds or do i have to get on the train?

If you're interested in Card Magic, I would advise two books. One or the other.

Firstly, The Royal Road To Card Magic. Covers a hell of a lot for a cheap book available pretty much everywhere.

If you have a bit more to spend, invest in Card College Volume One and work your way through.

Welcome. 8)

I learnt from Royal Road, and it's under a tenner.

Card College is something like £20-£30 per book (and there are 5 of them in the main series)

They are stunning, wonderful books, but that's a hell of an investment.

But he'd only need to buy volume one and that would last months! If he wanted to proceed, he could go on to volume two.

Dominic, I shall fight you to the death for the Card Magic book of choice  :P

I get the impression you're more of a cardie than me, so I'll bow to your greater experience :)

They are both superb, Card College is most definitely the better resource, but it's a bigger investment. Plus, you can pick up Royal Road from Waterstones, Borders or Amazon.

It's like comparing Mark Wilson's to Tarbell. Personally I would say that Tarbell beats Wilson hands down, but then you're looking at ~£150 versus £15...

Hiya, welcome to TM.

If you're mainly interested in cards then both the book suggested by the boys are great. If you want to have a look at some other areas of magic, then Mark Wilson's Complete Course is great. It covers cards, coins, ropes, cups and ball, sponges and a load of other things too.

Hi there,

Whilst all recommendations so far are very worthy investments, I'd like to rock the boat a bit and recommend Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic.

You can get it off Amazon or at Waterstones for £15.

There is a large section on card magic, as well as a wealth of information on other types of magic, and should keep you going for months.

If, after a little exploring you decide that you want to specifically pursue cards, then I'd recommend moving on to one of the card specific books. But as a 'first book of magic', Mark Wilson will really open up your eyes.

All the best,

Josh.
