Brad Christian's pass tutorial is appalling - pay no attention to it or you'll be doomed. Personally I think the Kaufmann DVD is also fairly poor, but that's just my snobbery.

I'm ill with the flu at the moment, falling about the house in a pharmaceutical daze, but I managed to take some pictures that will help me to illustrate what I have to say on this...

Never put the fingers inside the break to perform a pass. Never.

The grip from which the pass is best performed is as follows (I'm left-handed, so maybe look at the computer screen in a mirror or something...):

See how the top packet is gripped by the index finger and the side of the pinkie, which maintains the break with just the flesh of the finger? This creates a sort of hinge which can be flipped with the middle and ring finger as the hand carries the packet from the top to the underneath:

How do people keep the pass silent? The movement is "one packet sliding against the other", so won't it always make some sound? Maybe I just need lots more practice - any tips to keeping it as quiet as possible would be appreciated! Thanks.

Just patter over it. I always talk over the pass and most other sleights to either divert attention or cover noise. It's the same as all those people worrying about making the Clip Shift silent. Why bother? Your voice is a remarkable thing when used correctly, and the most annoying thing in the case of certain other people.

See now I do the Pass in quite a different way to Queenie. I put my little finger all the way into the break and when I want to do the Pass, the top packet is sort of angle-jogged with my little and ring fingers and then I do the Pass as normal.

What that does is instead of the face of the top packet sliding against the right edge of the bottom packet, only the extreme top edge of the top packet slide against the top of the bottom packets right edge. Significantly less friction, which means for a fast but very smooth Pass.

I am aware that probaby makes absolutely no sense but I feel very rough and this is the best I can think of. So there :cry:

That's fair enough babyshanks, but then you have to consider how you're going to get into that position, and cover it - I for one don't like holding massive breaks for any length of time because funnily enough, the specs seem to notice when you've said "I'll lose your card in the deck" and then you've sandwiched half your hand in there!

A quick pass is a great control, but there are others. As I remember, Brad Christian's routine involves exposing the pass, and then getting everyone to burn your hands while you do it, or something... :? doesn't strike me as the best idea, but there you go.

If you just want it as a control, try the spread pass too, I use it loads more than the reg'lar pass.
