Appearing canes

Postby Ed Wood » Jan 13th, '09, 13:27

So I'm venturing into an area of magic I am particularly ignorant of. Silks and appearing canes are a far cry from mentalism. I have an idea of doing an effect with an appearing cane in a show, possibly a very bad idea as it is a mind reading show.
The fantasio appearing cane seems to be the one most commonly advertised. Anyone know what the quality of this is like? Are there any better options?
Cheers Ed

what are you actually doing? I only ask, because fantasio canes are great for many things, but not so great at others.

Uummm, making a cane appear.
Seriously, nothing more exciting than a silk to cane.

From my brief search Walsh don't appear to make them anymore. Any other recomended brands for metal canes?

almost any metal cane will do. I put walsh, becaue to me it's a generic term for steel canes. I would say that its probably a good idea to get one from a dealer, rather than Ebay, who often have them, because the cheap ones are Indian made, and tend to be crappy.
If you can get a blued steel one, it wont rust, and will look black at a short distance.

Chris, I'm tempted but at the moment I'm just playing around with an idea. If this is a cold failure, which is highly likely, then it will just be another item to add to my box of stuff I should never have bought and will never use. I think for now I will just buy a cheap plastic cane and if i have any success I will look towards upgrading to metal.

Ed If your going to use a fantasio, use a streamer, or ribbon rather than a full square silk, because it will fit better.

I have to say though as an opening effect for stage or caberet, Id be inclined to enter with a cane, which i would use as a pointer.

I would have a a coloured silk" freely" chosen, then presto. your cane changes into the "freely" chosen coloured silk.
I would then explain that what the audience has just seen, is a magic trick.

And i would continue the show demonstrating the difference between that one piece of " magic" and mentalism. :)

Thats kinda the idea. Something along the idea of this is magic, perform the silk to cane. Then say, but I dont do magic and continue with the mind reading. Just an idea I've been playing with, probably won't work as it will just place the idea of magic in people's mind. However I do love to see an appearing cane so it will be fun to play with.
