It was about time...

... that I finally introduce myself to my fellow conjurers.

I'm a 32-year-old Bavarian bloke currently living with my Finnish wife and little daughter at the Arctic Circle in Northern Finland. The summers up here are short and the winter nights long, so there's plenty of time to spend some time in a cozy place to practise magic.

I'm mostly performing card feats and I think some of you might have noticed from my previous posts that I am a huge fan of Ricky Jay. Besides cards I also fumble around with IT related routines and get more and more intersted in children's magic because it's just the greatest thing in the world to see my little daughter's smile when I baffle her with feats like D'Lites, sponge bunnies, Aquarius, coin tricks, etc...

Besides magic I cultivate interests in RC helicopters, cooking (mostly classic French cuisine, Mediterrean and hearty Bavarian food), snow scooter tours, Flight Simulations and off-track forest skiing.

There are not too many magicians up here in Northern Finland, hence you don't really have the chance to see performances in pubs or shows. On the other hand, the audience is not so much spoiled by magic TV shows (Blaine, Angel, etc.) and changes of reactions like "aaah, I've seen that on TV already" are close to zero ;)

I really enjoy the time here at the forum and if one of you happens to visit Santa's Christmas village in Lapland one day, let me know... I'm his neighbour. It's beautiful up here. Lapland - Home of the Lapdance ;)

Cheers,

Magnus

Welcome to TM!
By the way when is summer the sun doesn't really set does it? It hides a bit behind the horizont but in a few minutes/hours it rizes again right? It never gets really dark...

You're absolutely right... we basically have no night from beginning of June until end of August. Around midsummer, the sun doesn't even disappear from the sky. There's nothing greater than to go for a swim or fishing at 3 a.m. after the pub ;)

The winters are freezing... we had down to -35 °C last February, the hairs in your nose freeze when you inhale, the gear shift on your bike doesn't work anymore and the oil on the chain freezes. But one the other hand... we all have saunas at home... ;)

Welcome Magnus. Have you seen the Northern Lights? You should be well placed for it - I'm planning a trip just to see them and you probably just have to look out of the window!

I'm up here for over two years, and up to now I haven't seen a single Northern Light. It has to be really frosty to see them and in most cases you see them only outside of cities and very late at night. No good when your sight is blurred by too much cider or beer ;)

You should make a trip up here, it's a really beautiful (and mysterious) country. Renting a snowscooter and going on a trip though snowy Lapland is worth the money alone. Acually we have a lot of British tourists up here, there are direct flights from Manchester to Kittilä in Lapland.

Santa's got an official post office north-east of Rovaniemi. Meaning, whenever a child from anywhere in the world writes a letter to him and only writes "To Santa Clause" on the envelope, the letter WILL end up there.

You can book a husky or reindeer sledge tour from Rovaniemi to visit the Santa Clause Village. You also get there by snowscooter, which is the most fun IMHO.

Hyvä huomenta Magnus and welcome to TM.
We have Northern lights or Aurora Borealis every winter here in Iceland. Below are a few samples, because they can be so different.
I hope you enjoy yourself in the forum.

Kippis!
