I've been sending PMs and after they are sent a copy either goes into my "outbox" or "sentbox", apparently at random! Am I missing something here?

I think they go into outbox to start with and when they've been read, they go into sent items.

Aha! Just done a search on this topic and it says they go from your sentbox to your outbox when the recipient reads them. So that clears that up. Sorry to have wasted your time!
