What an Inspirational Person

Postby Lady of Mystery » Feb 4th, '09, 15:35

I've just got back from my lunchtime swim but whilst at the pool I met the most amazing person.

I was doing my lengths as usual when I looked over and noticed another girl who was keeping up with me well (not meaning to boast but I'm usually the quickest in the pool so always notice any other fast swimmers) and thought, wow she's not a bad swimmer. It wasn't until a while later that I noticed that she had no legs below the knee, which made her swimming even more impressive.

I saw her afterwards in the changing room and commented on her swimming. We got chatting and it turns out that until 3 years ago she had been over weight (she's now an amazing looking girl) and the most excersie that she ever got was a 2 minute walk to the shops to get cigarettes. She was then involved in a car accident where she lost her legs. She realised how lucky she was to be alive and decided to change her life around. She's now competing nationally at swimming and wheelchair athletics with a goal to complete the London Marathon.

I just can't help but admire her, she's had a terrible accident that would probabaly knock most of us right down and has come out of it like she has.

Puts it all in to perspective really, doesn't it?

Apart from the inspiration, stories such as this should make us stop and think how fortunate we are as well.

People like that make me sick!

what's wrong with the good old adage of using negative aspects of your life to throw ones hatred and self pity in others faces.
Under, non-achievement or the wrecking of others achievements is in itself an acheivement and should be applauded as its the British way.

mind you saying that last time I got into a swimming pool I was harpooned.

I was just overwhelmed by her courage, would I be able to pick myself up and achieve what she has after something like that? I really don't think that I would.

This morning I fell over 5 times, cut my hand on a thorn bush and my new shoes tore the skin off my ankles and I can barely walk..

I still made it to work though..

Ok.. its not quite on the same level when it comes to inspiration..

That is indeed a remarkable story. I probably couldnt pick myself up physically, let alone mentally
