I actually get the impression that also some well respected members in this forum seem to possess an inexhaustible amount of DVDs and books when I read their posts. To me the phrase "I just checked out method X in book Y..." starts to sound suspicious if you know that book X alone costs 50 bucks and the contributor is posting dozens of such posts.

A good example are the OOTW threads, some people just seem to know ALL versions on the market... either they must be members of a magic club with a very well sorted magic library, or they are immensely rich so that they can really buy all the booklets and DVDs on the topic, OR they know how how to "check out" the different handling methods by other means.

No offense to anyone, I think the ones with the huge magic e-book folders on their hard drives know who they are.

From my own perspective, I buy EVERYTHING legitimately and I don't have a single 'e-book' or downloaded piece of magic. However, I'd love to be immensly rich

As for OOTW, a lot of the spin-offs while crediting previous versions, go on to describe in detail just how they differ from what they have just bought, thereby giving away the secrets of the other routines. There are many other examples of this.....

Magic clubs I'm sorry to say do share secrets amongst members that are commercial routines that strictly speaking, should be bought by each person.

I think you underestimate CUPS.

I see myself as a person who is not affected by the tragic blight, but in the last three or four years I have probably spent a few thousand on magic (Most of which is of course confined to drawers in good CUPS spirit).

It's good to see so many folks making the point about such forums - one of the conditions of registration here is an agreement to not spam and to not promote other forums of this kind. Cliffsmith has decided to ignore both of these requirements in order to gain entry and spam everyone. It begs the question of how good can that forum be if it has to poach members from other places. As you might guess, it's easy to see how many people he's spammed (over 40!) so it's not accidental or misguided. He's banned of course, and we will be taking due note of any future activities. I'd like to to say a big thank you to all who PM'd the details to the Mods and for the support shown for TM .

Oooooo lets all go incognito and see if we can work out who is who ..... kind of like a masqerade party ....

That may be true, but I would still be the first to admit that I do have a small library of stuff (mainly some old penguin magic videos from when I started out) that "fell onto my computer" via msn from another magician (or 2...or 3) from this forum.

I don't want people to start getting on their high horse at me for it - I am just being honest! And I know many a magician from this forum who have the same...in fact, a hell of a lot more, that has "fallen onto his/her computer". I'm not here to dob anybody in, but you would all be very surprised at some of the people mentioned.

At the end of the day, I think most magicians (though I do not by any means mean all) do have a small e-library of goods. This may be down to the "non-refundable nature" of magic, whereby we all buy loads of useless rubbish, and spend our hard-earned on nothing efffectively, as we have "brought the secret" and cannot get a refund. Where it would have been better to give it to charity and we would have got more for our money. I believe that many magicians, myself included, just like the occasional freebie allowing us to finally "get one up" on the dealers.

Now I know that some people may come back saying "it isn;t the dealers that miss out, it is the creators" and yes, in hindsight I agree. However when you have that person saying that the latest effect going for £15 is "just a pass, with a very clever DF'er" and is just a re-wash of old things, I for one would be happy I didn't waste my hard-earned.

What would the other OOTW methods be for example, if it isn't a re-wash of other methods? I for one don't know, having not seen any, but I wouldn't want to pay another £20-odd just to be told it is the original with a deck switch before the deal, for example.

I think the point that I am trying to make is that most magicians, even if they dont admit it/don't want to admit it, partake in some form of "magic falling onto computers". Most, though once again not all, if they deny it, are only fooling themselves.

Looking at the later posts looks like the guy changed his forum. I told him I wouldn't join a forum that would let anyone in to secret area. He then said he'd change it to 50 posts. Guess he also changed his PM too lol

One aspect that gives me peace though: I think it it well worth considering that even IF people have several gigabytes of non-legally acquired e-books on their hard drives... this material still has to be READ, UNDERSTOOD and PRACTISED to become of any use to them.

I assume that someone can get lost and dis-orientated in such an amount of information, so that eventually he/she will not perform much of the stuff anyway.

During university time, my room neighbor had tenthousands of illegally downloaded mp3 files on his computer which he proudly burned onto CDs which decorated his whole room. He admitted that he actually never listenes to any of them because he was too busy downloading that stuff.

There's a big difference between collecting and actually USING material.

In that sense: happy downloading and don'f forget that you can acually read that stuff

Good point Magnus, I have trouble remembering what's in my hard books and on DVDs and E-books I've bought over the years, let alone having a giant collection of them! I went on a spending spree just before christmas and added loads of stuff so I find it even harder to remember where what was!
