True Astonishment - Paul Harris

Postby Andyb » Jan 15th, '09, 00:54

Hi All,

(Long time no post - Sorry! :( )
I have searched where possible over this site and not found a sniff of the new offering from Paul Harris - due to be released at the end of the month.

Have I missed something here?

Anyway - Any new information/update would, naturally, be greatly appreciated (I have my order in already!)

There is a 31 page 'rant' on another forum which has a somewhat food based theme and loves green!

Is anyone here as excitable as me about this? I have been out of 'Magic' for a little while and this has bought me back into the fold and caused me to revisit Art of Astonishment {as well as everything by Juan Tamariz} - He just happened to be next to Art of Astonishment H and J being next to each other.
[No - its not an OCD thing - I checked many times :D]

Thanks

Andy

I have to say I'm intrigued by this too. I guess there are no reviews simply because it's not yet released.

There's an almost evangelical air about this release though. The marketing video shows some stunned spectators/participants so it promises to be superb.

I didn't know too much about Paul Harris and I couldn't understand why all the routines I was seeing were performed by others..with stuff saying "...by Paul Harris".

At about £140 for a nice box and some DVDs it seems a bit steep but it looks like it could be so much more than the sum of its parts and probably a worthwhile investment - financially and magically!

I think the release date is Late Jan / Early Feb so the reviews should start coming soon ............also looking around you will do well to get it for about 140 quid (hopefully someone will now prove me wrong)

Sorry to disappoint you laccal142, but I'd be inclined to prove you right. Every dealer in England seems to have it for some £240 pounds - daveyleeds' £140 is just a bit too optimistic, I think.

Some of our American friends stock it at $300 with free international postage (some offer a few freebies instead of or on top of that), which, even with a fluctuating exchange rate, seems to make it a little cheaper.

The '31 page rant' that Andyb referred to has become a sixty-something behemoth of an exchange, albeit quite a compelling one. A review of the first two discs of the set has been posted on the same site in the 'DVD reviews' section, and reviews of the following seven discs have been promised.

Not too sure when this bad boy will arrive in England - I'll post a review when it arrives, if people still need one.

Hope that helps,

Max.

Looks interesting, but the price pretty much guarantees I will never own it. Not necessarily a bad thing, though.

If it weren't for an impending and expensive holiday I'd have snatched this up. Looking at what you get the price doesn't look too bad, even forgetting the fancy box etc, there are nine dvds plus some apparently very handy utilities and gaffs.

Paul's been accused of 'selling out' a fair bit over the last decade and personally I think it's easy to see why unless you dig a bit deeper and look into his mindset and direction of recent years. What you can't deny is that he's probably the greatest innovator and thinker of the last 20-30 years and you could easily make a professional living using only his material, some people do in fact.

On the other hand the marketing is a tad ellusionisty and the effect descriptions look like Sankey's written them but look past that and consider that if you get one solid usable effect from each dvd you've got yourself an act that you can take straight out and perform.

The artist who does not rise, descends.

I thought Alakazam had released this today for £240. It does look pretty good, but I can't see myself buying this for a very long while. And I agree with bronz on the whole marketing thing.

Also, what is the forum you guys are talking about? Is it the Cafe? I have no intention of reading through 60 pages of it though, just wanted to have a butchers.

Yes, it is the Cafe. They've 'locked the thread' now, which just means that in the reviews section there are quite a few messages from people saying 'my set still hasn't arrived'. The people that have actually reviewed some of the discs do seem to rate them highly, though.

Well, I haven't had time to watch the DVDs yet (it just arrived today while I was at work), but the wooden box certainly is nice!

I should hope so, too! I know you're paying for first class material from one of the finest minds in magic, but for that money some seriously fancy packaging wouldn't go amiss, eh? The icing on the cake, as they say. ;)

There are issues re Discs. There is a big thread somewhere (poss on the cafe ) re disc errors.

Check where you bought them as all dealers are apparently aware.

True Astonishments - first thoughts

Postby hunty » Mar 4th, '09, 09:51

What a way to start my career posting to talkmagic.

I don't know if this will be useful to you guys here or not because I am a complete novice; a beginner who only really started researching magic and it's application in order to help my eldest daughter (7yrs) out with her little Marks & Spencers Magic gift set for Christmas. Let's just say I have been bitten.

So I've bought a few tricks and gimmicks over the past couple of months, mainly incidental things like a Bitten Coin that will make the kids smile and go wow, or more 'self-working' stuff like an ID which always gives me a chuckle when people double-up in amazement over dinner. But I figured if there was ever a way for me to truly appreciate the thought, talent and craft that goes into Magic and it's presentation then this would be the set for me. And boy was I right.

The order from MagicTricks.co.uk came in less than a day (I ordered at 3pm, it arrive at 8am the next day) and I pretty much devoured the whole set from then until 10pm last night; viewing everything in order and then going back to check out the cookies/easter eggs as well.

I don't know if a full review from me would be useful as people far more knowledgeable and experienced than I will be better at critiquing the set - but for me (a person of limited knowledge and experience BUT a genuine passion and desire) it's quite simply an astonishing body of work.

With items running from the immediately do-able [Twilight Angels, Extraordinary Proof et al] through to some incredible handling by Cheng and wonderful lessons in set-up and gimmick creation I simply couldn't wait to try stuff out on friends last night and then to learn more this morning.

Is it worth the price? Personally I had real reservations and felt like I had been a complete and wasteful idiot as soon as I hit the 'Buy' button - but since it's arrival I have been like a giddy, ten-year-old and I now have enough material to learn and master for the whole year.

I hope this has been of use to some body (anyone) on here, and errr.. Hi. My Name's Hunty, and I am a Magician (in training).

Hi Hunty

I've heard nothing but good things about this set from novices and professionals alike.

I had a look at a box set a couple of weeks back in Mike Danata's Magic Studio and it is certainly impressive box set that's beautifully produced.

I've also heard a couple of people say that just a couple of the tricks has justified the cost to them.
