On DL and breaks

Postby MoonWalker » Jan 1st, '05, 18:43

Im recently having trouble doing DL and breaks. Well prolly it's becuase my deck is too worn, but when I did do DL, my audience said it looked like it was 2 cards. And it's pretty hard to establish a break quick and well, I found it quite difficult to square the 2 top cards up after doing the finger push over break.

Anyone can give me tips? Thank you!

I had trouble with this too and don't often use the finger push over. Rather with the cards in my right hand I place my left hand over the deck and with my left thumb gently riffle the corner to get two cards against my right pinkie.

It does mean that you have your left hand almost obscuring the deck but I find that by doing it when I am speaking and then having some kind of delay, verbal or otherwise, between the move and the DL that follows people don't find it suspicious. Also my breaks are small and I have yet to have one pointed out by an audience - although I don't perform for that many people!

On the actual lift I was doing it as taught by the Royal Road to Card Magic but now often I use a move I got from Boywonder of these forums. He double lifts by holding his right hand over the cards (held in his left) and dropping his thumb and first finger like a pincer he holds onto both short sides of the card as he turns it. It almost guarantees that the cards won't slide and show as two.

I hope I have described well enough what I am meaning - I have much respect for magic authors now - describing a move in writing is hard!

Oh and on the topic of cards I use old decks - 25-100 years old and double lifts are not ideal with old cards. I save those for new decks and use other shuffles and especially cuts with the older decks.

Hope the above helps.

i always had trouble with 'Thats two cards!' syndrome until i started using another method for the DL.
The method i now use is to riffle the inner left corner with my thoumb in a sort of biddle grip with the right hand (the deck is set in the left hand) i then grab the two cards and constantly pust against my left hand fingers witht the two cards. When turning over the two i apply pressure on the top of the deck with the two cards i am turning to avoid the coming apart.
i apologise if that sounds rubbish or is pretty obvious, just trying to help!

By the way, I'm having problem doing Le Paul Spread as well, I can spring out the card, but I can't spread them long enough, how do you hold the piles after spreading the cards? any tips doing this move?

Thanks!

Actually the mechanic of this technique is pretty simple. Just hold the deck with your left hand in mechanics grib, then squeeze the deck and spring the card out, and hold the cards with your right hand.

I dont know if I had described it clearly enough, ask me if you need more details.
