It's a Fearson piece. I'd love to sit the two of them side by side to see what the differences are in that they look so similar as to what you can do with them.

NOT a reel
Not a spooler

Hmm, likewise craig - the fact its only about $39 is promising, seeing what it can do. Although it looks as if (this is judging by the demo video of course...) that the Tarantula has more freedom.

However, I've definately been wrong before...

It wouldnt surprise me if this is just a rehash of Fearson's Original Floating Cigarette Routine .
I recall seeing steve doing this at an IBM in St Louis about 16 years ago.
( probably longer.. time flys.)

In his hands its briliant. but ive seen several others make a real pigs ear of it.
anyways, that want a reel, or a pull.

just a carefull set up.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Steve has told me personally that this is a revamped version of his classic Cigarette hook-up. He says he's made some cool improvements. He ALSO says that Yigal Mesika uses it in Tarantula without Fearson's permission.

Of course he'd say that...

Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Why is the creator himself saying this such a problem? Wouldn't this be the most credible source?

Well think about what the creator of the tarantula will say, I very much doubt it will be 'I ripped this off from another magician'.

Ultimately the dependability of the 'creators word' will depend on the creator. Would you trust Wayne Hochin (or however its spelled), If he said he had a new, original idea?

I'm not casting doubt on either party in this case, I'm just waiting for the reviews for both.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

In any case, Steve's got a new demo up.

Maybe it's my age, but half of that DVD was intro and silliness, about a quarter was testimonial and a tiny fraction displayed the trick.

Call me cynical, but I understand that magicians use misdirection so that we won't see what's actually happening. Hmmmmm?

Sorry, but based on the videos my vote is for Tarantula--I got to see, indeed was wowed, by the presentation.

Terry, since you've seen Steve's bit, let me know what you think when it comes to how his thinking has been applied to TARANTULA... there is no hesitation on the T DVD in giving Fearson credit where it applies.

I think my interest in these two effects has been misunderstood. This is not my style of magic, so I won't be purchasing either. But, I am interested in comparison reviews if anyone dares to tackle it!

Here's the new trailer that shows mostly what the reel does :). When you speak, Steve listens

http://emagicsupply.com/112-mlstrailer-71-custom.html

And regardless of whether Yigal credited Fearson or not, he did not obtain permission to use Fearson's hook-up. He seems to think since he (unethically) obtained rights to Steve's Sunglasses Animation effect in 1999, he now has access to everything Fearson. What?

Fearson vs tarantula

Postby wthierry » Mar 19th, '09, 16:40

I have Steve Fearsons book from many years ago, it doesnt look like this is much different, his hookup is easy simple and not gimicky, although I am not familiar with mesikas hookup it looks to be the same as fearsons but with a gimicky and noise making power reel.... anyone have any thoughts whom is familiar with both?
