SECOND DEGREE BURN

Postby dat8962 » Mar 1st, '09, 19:56

No - not a variation of Jason Palter's 3rd degree burn

I was in the kitchen this morning, not taking my time while cooking breakfast  and managed to spill some hot oil resulting in second degree burns over the back of my left hand  .

Ouch - really hurt but I managed to get it straight under the cold tap for 30 minutes before heading down to the local A&E in Warwick, where they had it under another cold tap for around 90 minutes.

The doctor - who looked around 19, said it could have been a lot worse but I'm gonna have an almighty blister later in the week. Looking at an area of skin around 4x2 inches.

Just shows how easy bad things can happen but luckily there won't be any long term damage :D

Anyway, lots of tea and sympathy now

I remember someone telling me once that you shouldn't hold your hand under a cold tap for more than 10 minutes in case you get hypothermia.

If that was how you were treated I shall slap my friend for lying to me

Hope you can still do magic Dave!
And here's to a speedy recovery :)

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism

Ouch. Sounds nasty, but I'm glad they think it should heal OK.

I managed to burn most of the skin off my nose once, and mercifully that cleared up without a scar. I felt like the Phantom of the Opera at the time. I shall spare you gentle souls the full description of the injury, and what it looked like while healing.

Sorry to read that Dat;

I wish you a speedy recovery. Maybe a bit of mentalism in the weeks to come, rather than pure sleight of hand wonders.

Get well soon.

Ouch dude :(

The good thing about 2nd degree burns is they often don't hurt as much as 1st degree burns as you've damaged all the nerve endings! But sometimes they hurt more...

Can I ask, what dressing have you got on there? There's this stuff called hydrocolloid dressing, not often used in hospital because it's pretty expensive (they tend to just use jelonet as I remember, which is horrid greasy stuff).

Hydrocolloid dressing is the dog's proverbial. It absorbs some of the exudate so you don't have to change it all the time (every 3-5 days, better the longer left I think) - they swell and start to look a bit "manky", but they heal things like burns really quickly by not drying it out.

I had a full thickness burn from an industrial glue gun on the top surface of my middle finger once - can't remember how long it took to heal with this stuff but I remember being surprised... a week, or something like that.

You'll know if you've got one on because the outer surface if the dressing is kind of like skin - flexible, a bit translucent, a bit rubbery.

If you've got gauze soaked in vaseline (jelonet) I suggest you get down to your local pharmacy and get hold of some Duoderm.

Thank's everyone. It's cheered me up that you care

The nurse, Mrs Doogie Howser squeezed a load of this gunk out of a tube and I think that she said it was called Flamosil or similar. A gause pad was put over the top and then a bandage to supposedly keep it in place. I am supposed to have it changed tomorrow but the whole thing came off tonight as the bandage was loose in case of swelling. There's a big red patch that looks in places as if it's already starting to blister.

Surprisingly there's no stinging or anything and it just feels normal so it may be that the constant water treatment helped a lot. Fingers crossed (pun intended  ) although I think at the time it was the shock more than anything else.

IT HURT

I often cook breakfast in a pair of shorts but this time I was fully dressed as we were preparing to go and visit my dad who is in hospital. Ironic isn't it!

I'll be back practising by mid week I reckon! :D

while it heals, why not slip a 10p in the impending blister pocket? when the new skin grows over the top...you'll have a nice coin reveal at your constant disposal...

no? too much?

get well soon sir - I'm sure you'll be all healed sooner than you think...next time, get the wife to do the cooking - its the ultimate excuse!

Heck yes, you should have - then the burn would be her problem, and not yours.

Get well soon, Dave!
