Forces and Sleights

Postby webby1983 » Dec 28th, '04, 22:54

Hey everyone, I'm real new to all this and am trying to get into the street magic scene, I therefore bought some popular tricks although one of them is a bit too advanced for me I think although I'm trying to persavere with it and learn it properly. The trick is called UnRipped and it's a torn and restored card trick, the Hobson's force is the one on the DVD which is suggested but I'd like to try and find out about some more force's that I may find a bit easier and more convincing to use. If anyone knows of any websites or books that I could use I'd appreciate it very much.

you need to buy 'the royal road to card magic' by Jean Hugard and Frederick Braue. I would highly reccomend this to start off with. It has an entire section on forces and many different types. It is also like a dictionary of other moves and sleights.

A tenner from amazon - definately worth it!

I'm with Luker21 on this one.

You could base your entire career on The Royal Road.
It really is that good.

Just don't be put off by the old fashioned style of writing.
The professionals still rate it as the best.

webby1983..

I'm witht he Royal Road as well..

however.. if you don't get on too well with books (I must admit I do struggle at times) there are a few other sources you could try..

There are a number of DVDs which contain forces such as..

10 Ways to force a card (£7.99)
---------------------------------------------------------
http://www.magictricks.co.uk/prodshow.asp?code=475

It's a bit pricey for what it is but it's not bad (I know others don't rate it but I thought it was OK when I bought it when I was in your situation not so long ago), however there are other sources which cover these 10 (including the royal road).

Basic Card Technique (Richard Kaufman) (£28.99)
---------------------------------------------------------
http://www.alakazam.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000 ... 1093#a1093

Which covers a few forces but also covers other sleights as well. Depends how heavily you want to get into card magic really or whether you just want to learn a force for Un-ripped (which i have by the way.. so I know what you're on about !). But not really just for forces as he only gives you two and it's expensive for that ! (and there are no tricks included)

Daryl's Ecyclopedia of Card Sleights Vol 4 (£27.99)
---------------------------------------------------------
Very expensive, but if you are serious about card magic.. I think this is a must. Volume 4 contains more forces than you'll probably need and it's daryl who I always find entertaining an easy to understand. I've now got 5 of the 8 volume set now (I buy them as I need to learn another sleight etc.. and have spread the cost of them over quite a few months). This series really is worth having if you're into card magic as it contains enough material to keep you practicing for many, many years. (but no real tricks as such).

So there you are..

I know some will disagree with me.. but if you do struggle with the Royal Road then you could try the above.

Hope this helps

Slippery
