Purist Mentalism

Postby Gaz » Jan 8th, '05, 11:20

Hello all,

If you've read my 'Greetings' you'll know I am a fan of suggestion. I'm putting out a bit of a call for anybody interested in pure psychology, as opposed to gimmicked trickery. My interest is suggestion and I would love to chat and learn and teach.

My fave stuff has to be inducing states, I like to make people drunk from one swallow and things like that. I do alot of coin guessing also and have latelt moved onto guessing numbers although I'm having trouble moving from between 0-10 to 0-100. It gets easier but is still hard. My fave method for it is DTI as I find it provides a useful insight into a persons procedures for operating.

I am very interested in NLP and suggestion. I have read books like Pure Effect, and have Devils Picture Book. I like the ideas of planting ideas into peoples heads etc. I think I am at the beggining of the stairway of this subject and would like to progress further... any suggestions?

One of the most influential people I know once said "Believe it or not, those people out there [in the world] are just not paying attention" and its true, Derren makes the statement in the devils picturebook that you can basically give people instructions as to what to do, but make it seem like your not.

The methods are numerous, massively varying and wildly interesting, at least to me. My take on suggestion is that it requires an understanding of the way people work, and I don't just mean biologically. Whether you choose Jungian psychology, Leary's Eight Circuit Model, NLP's meta patterns/predicates/patterns for beleif stucture/etc or indeed any model of human neurology and combinations thereof as long as you have something that you can empirically determine to yourself as useful by testing it rigorously. The second requisite is methodologies whereby you can then begin to influence the system you understand, hypnosis and NLP are good methods or you may find something else.

I'll first point you to http://www.saladltd.co.uk which is the web site for my NLP trainer, Jamie Smart. He sends out free weekly NLP tips to your email inbox and they are a great starting point for people interested in NLP, the backdated tips can be found in the archive. Other than those I'll list some books I have found useful.

Understanding people:

Quantum Psychology - Robert Anton Wilson
Prometheus Rising - Robert Anton Wilson
Kentonism - Kenton Knepper
WonderWords - Kenton Knepper
NLP at Work - Sue Knight

Also most things by Richard Bandler or to do with Milton Erickson.

Hope that helps you climb some steps.

Thanks Gaz thats great. I bought an NLP book a few months ago, and to be honest it is sitting in the bottom of my draw as I onlty really flicked through it. I loved the part on anchors. However the book seemed to be more of a self help book rather than looking through a third party view of the outside. I will check those out and go from there

Thanks again

Yes, unfortunately that will be a frequent occurance when looking for NLP material, NLP is horribly evangelistic.

The NLP ideas that are most interesting in this context will be things like

The meta Model
The milton Model
Meta-Prgrams <-- Big one.
Sensory Predicates
Sensory Acuity <-- Another big one
Metaphor <-- One of the best ways to make people draw cartin things.

Not got time to talk more just now, speak to you soon.

Try getting hold of books like 'Tranceformations' and 'Frogs into Princes' both by Richard Bandler if you are interested in NLP. They can be a bit tricky to find but are worth their weight in gold!!
