One of my favourites is that the British crown still own Manhatten which wasn't part of the peace deal after 1776 and all that. The US government still pays "rent" annually to the British crown to use Manhatten.
During the American civil war, the Confederates fully expected the British to join the war on their side. In return the confederates were to give the British the Eastern seaboard states that were once part of the Empire while the remaining States would form the Confederacy. This outcome would also ensure the continued supply of cotton which was essential for the mills of the north of England. The UK however declined to get involved.
Walmart donates shed loads of cash annually (tax dodge) to the religious right in the US. Or so I believe. Gulp. If I now disappear from the face of the earth, tell the police to check the industrial freezer at my local Asda superstore.
Hang on! These aren't conspiracey theories - they're truths!

They've certainly underachieved since then! The killings in Northern Ireland over the weekend gave the news services an excuse to show footage of IRA outrages. I'd forgotten just how scary proper terrorists could be.

Aye. Makes this inexorable steamroller-ride to the database state all the more disproportionate.
