Sublimely Squares - review

Postby Jacquin » Mar 12th, '09, 08:15

Hi

http://www.outlaw-effects.com/store/the ... uares.html

I have been playing around with Subliminally Squared or as I believe it is now known 'Sublimely Squares' for the last week with great results. Although I would not consider it fully audience tested as I have only been using it in walk around situations with individuals and small groups I have to say I love this already. I cannot wait to use it with a whole audience as a stage effect.

The favorite version is sweet. I pull out an envelope remove the square flash it and put it away in the envelope. Get into presenting the premise and then slam them with the reveal. Because people know me as a hypnotist, and most of my mentalism warms up the possibility of someone getting zapped, I use it as an excuse to talk about the mind. The savant idea had great appeal to me and led me to just talking about the unconscious taking in everything, finding patterns in everything, making calculations quicker than a machine etc.

This has got me over my personal issue with squares - in nearly every presentation I have seen it just looked like the performer being a smart *** or some kind of maths puzzle. The ebook as well as recommendations in this thread has actually led to many more effective presentations and I am grateful for that. Sublimely Squared deals with my concerns in a stroke - it is of course all about the participant and their skills.

The ebook provides a good history of the evolution of the idea, which in itself will give you several ideas for how you might present this, and has contributions from plenty of mentalists whom I respect a great deal.

One caveat before you dash to buy this, I think I am becoming a die hard Dr Bill fan :) That is definitely a few steps short of a crony - but hey when the company is that good who cares :) I only discovered his products in the last 4 or 5 months and find myself using more and more of his ideas in my work. As an example I now open up every hypnosis course I run with my presentation of The Jumping Pulse from Bill's Suggestibilities released earlier this year. I use it at some point in nearly every performance of mentalism I do as a lead into other things and in intimate situations it is often my hypnotic induction of choice. I enjoy the way Bill can take something very small and load it up with potential. Thanks Dr Bill.

Any questions about my use of SS or Suggestibilities feel free to PM me.

Anthony

Ugggh! I just became a recent convert to Werner Miller's "E-Z Square," and now this!!

My anti-CUPS commment aside, I do like the audience participation angle. I can already feel the credit card start to burn...

I too like to move beyond mere 'mental prowess' and add deeper meaning to the square. Hence, my contribution in the book...check out Steve Pelligrino's stuff in there as well...very nice!

Yeah...well, seeing your name in the blurb made me end up pulling the trigger on this one, Dr. Todd. The posting of this review was poorly timed with the US tax season. I'm destined for CUPS rehab, methinks.
