In what way does it appear as overkill?

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

It's meant to be a very good book from what I've heard of it.

It's been mentioned before but, even though it's a basic course in a wide range of magic there are better books available. What struck me was the difference in prices:

Amazon US:

by David Pogue (Author)
List Price: $19.99
Price: $12.59 & eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping on orders over $25. Details
You Save: $7.40 (37%)

Amazon UK:

Magic for Dummies by David Pogue (Paperback - 9 Jul 1998)
Buy new: £18.99 £16.14
41 Used & new from £6.78

That's correct - yesterday I was checking the price of Harrington's poker books - GBP 21 on amazon.co.uk, USD 19 on amazon.com. That more than makes up for the higher shipping fees. Incredible. BTW USD 19 = GBP 13. 8 quid difference for the same product, from the same vendor.

We always have been and probably always will be.

With regards to the Dummies book, I bought it several years ago back when I was a newbie and found it to be quite good. I don't think you can go far wrong with a Dummies or Idiots Guide book; they're pretty good and always fun to read.

And there's no VAT or import duty on books so Amazon UK would appear to be charging an inappropriately high figure. Today's exchange rate ( http://www.currenciesdirect.com/uk/ ) is £1 = $1.4537 which means the equivalent book cost would be just under £8.70. Even with shipping it's cheaper ex USA at the moment!

Nothing new, sadly. A certain high-profile software suite used in the creative industry created by a certain high-profile company does the same when it comes to their price structure; meaning that to buy it in the UK you have to pay more than what's already a large amount in America.

And because one of the programs in the software suite is what you need to create a certain high-profile web technology (let's call it "blink" - which is all closed so only a certain high-profile company truly knows how it's done, making free/cheaper solutions inferior) you pretty much have to pay.

They also tried similar with a certain high-profile file format (let's call it "PDE") until other applications got smart and being able to save as this format is now just as good as Adob... sorry, certain-company's software.

Yea I saw it and I own a few other idiots books from years back and they were all total rip offs. They either told me nothing I didnt already know or nothing practical so I assumed this was a rip off but I guess I was wrong

I've had it out from the library. It has sections on planning out acts, personality and a bit on business if I remember rightly. It covers a good few things that most beginners books wouldn't normally. The magic covered wasn't to my taste, but some good points raised.
