My first paid gig!

Postby Relish » Mar 23rd, '09, 14:00

Altghough im sure you experts have seen plenty of these threads, i'd like to post a quick report of my first paid gig, a wedding last Saturday.

I only had an hour and there were about 70ish people to be entertained in the bar lounge while the main room was cleared from the dinner and prepared for the evening.

It was a bit daunting approaching the first table but after then it went really well. I took mainly card tricks, about 10 in all (including Extractor, Strange travellers and designed for laughter which never ceases to impress). For a bit of variation i performed a variation of Greg Wilson's Ring Leader (which didn't quite have the impact i expected, think ill have to vary the presentation) and the stars of the show were Coinvexed and Directors Cut. By the time i was approaching some tables they were asking for them and each time they left them reeling.

There were a few awkward people there, one lady who told me straight that she didnt like it and for me to stay away from her!, a couple of bored looking teenagers who i wished i'd have avoided and an elderly fella who thought he knew how everything was done. Each time i just smiled, stayed professional and moved on.

As i was leaving, the Bride and Groom said that as i had waited for them (they were about 1/2 hour late) and stayed a bit longer, they are going to send me some more money!

I'd tell everyone that as soon as they feel confident, get out and perform for real people that you dont necessarily know. Friends and family can be too sympathetic or critical but the look on laypeoples faces when you reveal the trick is priceless. Did my confidence the world of good.

due to the impact of coinvexed I'm going to have to study obo now and get more coins in my repertoire.

Just bought the Mirage set from world magic too - something to work towards!
