ABRA RIP

Postby John McDonald » Mar 28th, '09, 10:43

Abra has gone! Got a big shock this morning when I read Walt Lees's Editorial. Apparently the magazine had been struggling for few years. It had a buyer who pulled out "at the eleventh hour" Can't believe this great weekly has gone.

'tis sad news, indeed. But I must confess that over the years I have only purchased about twenty or thirty copies of Abra. Perhaps if people like me had consistently supported them, then it might be a different story. Use it or lose it, like they say. :(

Yep, I'll miss it too. We've got the 'Magicseen' and 'Genii' glossy mags but Abra had something special.

Are there any good e-magazines that have magic related articles, tricks, reviews etc?

Abra RIP

Postby Allen Tipton » Mar 28th, '09, 13:12

:( Yes it is indeed a very sad day for real magicians.
Abra has an unbeatable record of being published,on the publishing date every week, since 1946.
Even when my old friend Don Bevan was editor and had a very bad car accident which laid him low for some time, his family went in and Abra appeared on time.

And it's all very well talking about e magazines and on line magazines, which are useful for up to the minute news, but they are Temporary

ABRA was The Printed Word and the only full record of British Magic, & its performers over the last 63 years.
We have lost OUR History Book.

It had its critics but don't 90% of magicians criticise...usually destructively and rarely constructively.
I heard this morning, from a young professional, how when performing in a Society's Show, the other magicians pulled other performers in that show, to pieces & after each performer in question had left the dressing rooms.
A sad state which is prevalent amongst magicians today; usually those who cannot perform well themsleves. They only think they can.!!

Abra was always fair.

I shall treasure the 3 bound volumes and the 100+ copies I still have.
The rest have been passed onto young magicians in the hope that they too, treasure the copies & respect what has gone before.
Tradition plays a huge role in ALL Arts, especially Performing Arts

I am terribly sad about this. I used to advertise in Abra and got fantastic response. Better than any other magazine.

Abra was there in my youth and it was there in my not-so-youth. I am sad it has gone.
