Are you invisible?

Postby seige » Jan 20th, '05, 17:16

Just out of curiousity, do you log on to this (or any other forum) as 'Hidden'? If so, why?

I am intrigued! I used to sign on as Hidden myself, for the specific reason that I felt that as an Admin on the site—it may seem offputting if users saw LOTS of admin (there are a few of us here lol).

I've asked a couple of people now, and the general reason seems to be "Because I don't want to be seen by people"... which is pretty obvious! People need to have their privacy, I guess.

Please, give your stories!

Possible reasons?

1. Cos they don't want to be seen by other members as being a 'board addict'
2. Because they hit the button by accident
3. Because they are a malicious axe murderer, and are on the run from the police

Who knows!

I've only done it once when I was watching someone here who I thought was not quite as he seemed and I left the cloak of invisibility switched on by accident until someone reminded me. As the Admin mob can see these invisible mortals, I can't see any need to cloak myself here or on any other forum so I don't bother. It's very tempting that, when I see someone 'invisible' to send them a PM saying, 'I can see you!!! (like someone did to me!) and see if it has the desired result. But, then again, I'm quite evil at times.

Some great suggestions so far... keep 'em rolling.

(I wonder if 'Lord_Lucan' will appear as a hidden member, or 'O-BinLaden' ???)

I only realised I was 'hidden' the other day. I changed that option in my profile as soon as I spotted what was happening.

Well, personally I never heard of this forum until I heard someone complaining in another forum about a "hidden" issue on this site. :)

Who cares if you are hidden or not? I don't see the big deal. I mean, the only thing is that you can tell when they are on the site right? If that's the only thing I could careless if someone is hidden or not.

Think I will make myself invisible now....

Shouldn't that be NSO?

I agree with Tom et al - Why bother?

I know magic involves secrecy but not to that extent.

While we haven't got anyone like that here, on other sites, people who enjoy being controversial/rude often become hidden, as do people who seem to come in for a lot of adverse comments (justified or not and often stemming from people in the first category).

lololol

I am tickled everytime I read Dale's post....

It has to be said, there are reasons for 'hidden' users cropping up that I'd never even considered!

Also, it seems that being hidden is not such a biggie. As mentioned, we Admin can see hidden users when they are online. It's just always been a curiosity as to 'why' people are hidden.

And, there IS a need to respect people's privacy, it seems. Otherwise, those clever people who created the Forum software would never have put the 'hidden' facility in there in the first place!

DALE! STOP IT!

My ribs can't take it ahahhahahahah....

Actually, you are right... maybe another thread on:

"Masquerading dignitaries: what name would YOU think other famous visitors would use?"

i.e. David Copperfield could be "Mr_Floats"
Paul Daniels could be "SayYes"
Dai Vernon could be "DeadManPosting" (no disrespect meant)
Tommy Cooper could be "JusLikeDat"

I am sure you can all find more amusing names....
