Postby babyshanks » Mar 31st, '09, 17:37

I knew Guy Hollingworth had a show about Expert At The Card Table but never researched too far into it. It tuns out this Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday he is doing the show at the Menier Chocolate Factory in Southwark.

Anybody going? Only £12.50 a ticket.

I got Guy his venue ten years ago when he first put on this show, and I saw it last summer in the Fringe.

It is an excellent show, extremely entertaining and amazing in equal measures. Guy has worked with Neal Patrick Harris' direction to hone the performance into an almost perfect delivery. Both magicians and real people can enjoy the spectacle.

If you are at all able, go.

Take care, Ian

Phil told me a great story about Guy Hollingworth the other day. Classic stuff and very funny. True, too. I'm sure he'll be along shortly to tell you all.

I'm even more tempted as the Director of this show, Neil Patrick Harris, is the same guy who was the lead character in Doogie Howser M.D.

Guy Hollingworth and Doogie Howser!!! Pinch me I'm dreaming

Yes he is.

he's also the host of the master of Illusion show in the states, and has gained a great reputation for his dramatic recreation of dr lynns "palengensia" Illusion, which may be on youtube.

I booked yesterday! We'll be going on Friday.

I'm a bit embarrassed to tell my story in public :-)

OK. I suppose its not that bad really.

You have to put this in context - which is that I'm a 'pretty average' magician when it comes to cards - in fact probably below average...

Anyway, I was at a (non-magician) friend's party a few years ago. She, knowing that I was interested in magic, said that she had another friend at the party who was also 'into magic' - she would introduce me, and maybe I could show him a trick or two.

You're probably way ahead of me already, but when I went over this friend was actually performing. His name was 'Guy' and you can probably work out his surname from this thread.

Suffice to say I certainly wasn't going to perform any of my humble efforts for the great Mr Hollingworth.

But it was interesting to see that a 'celebrity' in the magic world could be completely unkown outside of it. My friend knew him as a trainee barrister and knew nothing of his 'other life'....

We saw it on Friday. Brilliant. And I was very sad and got him to sign my copy of Drawing Room Deceptions

He is a very skilled performer and it was an entertaining show (even my wife who generally has a low opinion of magic enjoyed it!). But I was amused that the trick that wowed me most was (I subsequently discovered) probably one of the least technically difficult.

I say 'I subsequently discovered' because although the tricks he performs purport to be from 'the expert at the card table' they are, of course, mainly from his own book :-) When I looked it up, I had forgotten how cunning it was...

That would be the card at any number, I assume... :)

Take care, Ian
