Card College - Ebook

Postby Stephen W » Apr 12th, '09, 14:30

I was just wondering if any had this?
If not here's a link with information:
http://www.lybrary.com/card-college-p-66.html

Just wondering do you think I would be better off getting this or would the book be better?
Thanks. :)

Since I'm a little older, I liked the book better. First of all this isn't a pdf file. It's html which you use your internet explorer/firefox to look it. I don't like html books, it looks cheap.
But it has the videos of the moves(not for tricks), so it has advantages then the book.
And they only relased Vol 1 & 2 on cd-rom. I wonder if they'll do the rest.

Given the choice, I will always opt for an actual book over a PDF, HTML or whatever, file. Even if it costs more, a real book is a thing of beauty (not to mention more practical, unless you spend most of your time on the road).

I do prefer a book myself but because the ebook had the video clips I didn't know. I'll probably just get the book. And funnily enough the ebook actually costs more than the actual book itself.
Thanks for the help.

I am not sure about UK pricing, but the price that lybrary.com is charging seems outrageous!

They want US$45 for a download file. My local dealer has the hard cover book for Cdn$40 (approx US$33 at today's rate). I have always been able to buy the downloaded version of books at a substantial discount off the hard cover price.

I guess I give lybrary.com two thumbs down (Did you get Siskel and Ebert in the UK?) on this one.

The ebook has video files in it? That's news to me. I didn't even know you could embed video files in a PDF file. Perhaps that accounts for the high price? Even though, $45 does sound a tad high.

As I said, it isn't a pdf file. It's a html file.
But pdf's can have embedded video files as well. (M. Close's Ebook I think) They will come within the pdf directory but you can watch it in the PDF.

Terry,

Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions.

First it's not a download but a CD-ROM which contains the entire text of Giobbi's Card College plus >100 video clips of Roberto performing the sleights taught.

For me seeing a move well executed is often the difference between learning the move correctly and not learning it at all.

Lybrary.com is an innovator in our field with exceptional quality, pricing and customer service.

Volumes 1 and 2 are now available, with a sleight discount if purchased together and volume 3 is to be released this year (I think).

Give it a chance and look to pick up one of the volumes. You won't be disappointed but in case you are they usually sell quickly in the For Sale section on one of the magic discussion boards or on eBay.

Regards,
Tony Tuccillo

Thank you for that information. From the early part of the description I understood it to mean that the .pdf was supplied on an CD Rom. Convenient, but not worth the premium over the cost of a book (IMHO).

However, after reading your post, I read the whole write-up, and so for the sake of others, here is what Tony is referring to:

"Altogether 89 video clips are present. These show Giobbi's hands without any comments...", which are unecessary because all the necessary information is in the Ebook.

I agree with you..video is much more illuminating than words--especially in the field of magic.

I had a look and you can also get a samples of what the ebook looks like from Lybrary's free section: http://www.lybrary.com/free_ebooks.php
On both of the samples (you get a sample of volume 1 and 2) it shows the layout and gives a video clip on each which are good, however I've bought Volume 1 in book form so I'll just stick with that for the time being.

Stephen - I didn't realize Lybrary.com now had samples of vol 1&2. Chris recently said he doesn't yet have a release date for volume 3 of the CD-ROM.

For me I learn best when I have a visual (usually a video clip) to augment my book studies. That's why although I have all five volumes in my library, I also own & use the CD-ROM.

NOTE: the CD-ROM's don't exactly align to the books. There are several lessons on volume one of the disks that actually appear in volume two of the books and visa-versa. To me that's a minor point.

Not to get off the subject but I recently purchased 'Ask Robert Giobbi' which is an innovative product from Chris Wasshuber of Lybrary.com. Subscribers pay a one time $15USD fee and can submit a single question to Roberto.

Magic theory, sleights, construction, etc and Mr Giobbi will provide a written answer which is captured in a downloadable PDF file. Subscribers then are notified via email when new questions are answered and they download the latest version of the PDF.

You don't have to submit a question and simply read the Q&A's. For me, someone who currently has more books & DVD's than I'll ever have a chance to work though, this is a perfect addition to my 'library'.

While discretionary money may be tight these days, $15USD seems to be a more than reasonable price for an every growing document. I'm biased as I've been a customer of Lybrary.com for more than 3 years and Chris is an astute businessman who recognized a niche market in a fairly narrow retail field to begin with.

Anyway I'm beginning to babble so I'll simply wish everyone a good night.

Where have you read that there will be the ebook volume 3 will be published?

I have read many months ago that Giobbi NEVER will publish volume 3, 4 and/or 5 on ebook (with videos).

I think the reason was that the ebook were copied illegal very often...

Unfortunately I don't remember where I read that!
