Downfall - Dan Hauss

Yet another overhyped trick that's sometimes to inpractical to perform.

Effect
move an object with your mind. No threads, magnets, wires, gimmicks, ...

Cost
/

Difficulty
3- because the preparation is inpractical.

Review
Dan Hauss is a creative mind and has released some good tricks.
You get what they promised: A moving object trick that doesn't use threads, magnets or wathever.

I tried this a couple times but the succes rate for this trick just isn't big enough. There's too much to keep in mind: the environment, the angle of the table, time period, misdirection, ... the preparation in general is just one big mind f*ck. Only in perfect conditions, that YOU can control, will this trick work every time.

The biggest problem I had with this dvd was the explanation.
Dan Hauss presents an object that will make your cardbox / cup / brick move but he doesn't explain why this object makes your cardbox move.

He also never explaines the placement of your object, and why you should place at such an angle or ...

I just don't know... it's like giving you an ID but without the explanation. Okay, you have the gimmick but now what ?

Overall
The idea behind this trick is good, but the set up is just too hard too pull it off.
I'd rather use a magnet then this method. But that's just my personal experience en opinion.

Someone here that likes this trick ?

i just saw this message on the website when I was looking for the price.

To all of our customers, supporters and sources of inspiration, we would like to offer an apology. Earlier this week we released a new product at www.papercranemagic.com from creator Dan Hauss. Downfall was in our minds a great way to perform PK illusions without the use of threads, magnets or other "traditional" methods. Although we still believe that Dan Hauss's Downfall methods are great, we feel we made an error in how we represented the product, particularly the use of the moving brick in the demo. You can achieve the same effect as the PK brick with the methods on the Downfall DVD and download but it is not taught on the DVD. The brick was put on the demo to demonstrate what was possible with the method.

It has become clear that the brick is the reason many people bought the effect. To fix this error Paper Crane and Dan Hauss are going to offer all customers who bought the effect a $25.00 store credit. We will also be temporarily removing the product from our website and we will make an attempt to improve the overall value of the product before rereleasing it for sale to the public. Again we would like to apologize and let it be known that Dan Hauss and Paper Crane take customer service and customer satisfaction very seriously and we appreciate all the support we have been given from the magic community in the past and we look forward to seeing it in the future. We have some new effects coming out in over the next few months that we are very excited about and may be a good use of that discount.

Thank you
Paper Crane Productions

I must say that this is a very generous offer from Paper Crane and Dan. The whole "brick" thing really was a lot to rationalise away.

I have to agree with the concensus. The technique is clever enough but it is fiddly to say the least and there is also the problem of the possibility of "forensic evidence" afterwards. Personally I just couldn't be bothered with the variables in the set up, the time limits, the situations and potentially the embarassment should anyone of those things go wrong. If it goes well then you will look very cool, if not you could end up feeling very silly.

I would have to consign it to the "Nice idea, but..." drawer. Sorry "PC" and Dan.

If we can hit that bullseye then the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards... Checkmate!
